Today in Terrible Ideas, the BlackBerry 10 Tells Your Friends When You’re Watching Porn

By / 04.03.13

The Blackberry 10's media player integrates with the phone's Messenger, meaning the phone tells your family and friends when you're watching videos on the web. It updates when you pull up a new video. As Geek.com says, the feature is fine as long as you're relaxing to some new Mumford & Sons. HOWEVA.

Notifying everyone that you’re checking out YouTube? Not a big deal. But when that… er… saucy video starts playing and BBM cheerfully tells your audience that you’re listening to “hotfurries.com?” That’s a lot more likely to have some unwanted repercussions.

As much as you want to fully utilize the great social features on your BlackBerry Z10, it might be a good idea to disable at least this one feature if you have any concerns about your BBM friends knowing where you watch videos on the mobile web.

Good God, BlackBerry can't do anything right.

Putting aside their issues and looking more broadly for a sec, what we're looking at is yet another instance where a company has bequathed us “social sharing”… that no actually wants. Spotify is truly the king of this. I don't want my friends to see (a lot) of the songs I listen to during the day. It's not that I have bad taste (although I probably do), it's just that sometimes Vanessa Carlton's White Houses is stuck in my head. And there's only one way to get it out. 800 Facebook friends don't need to know about this. Vanessa and I have a personal relationship.

Wait, what were we talking about again?
