Well this is amazing. Everyone who is going to college this fall should watch this video just to realize how low the bar has fallen for public intellectual discourse in this country. Reza Aslan, who has four PhDs in religion and is himself a Muslim, wrote a book about Christianity called "Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth." Without pontificating, a this money-quote describes relentless Islamophobic attacks he faced on Fox News yesterday:
"To be clear, I am a historian. I am a PhD in the history of religions. This is a piece of history. I'm not sure what my faith has to do with my twenty years of academic study... I think it's strange that instead of debating the merits of the book, we're actually discussing the right of the scholar to actually write it."
As someone remarks on YouTube, "It's like he's talking to a slow child."
