Someone Paid More Than $170 Million For A Painting Of What Appears To Be Liza Minnelli’s Bush

Yesterday the ‘Nu Couché’ by Amedeo Modigliani sold for $170.4 million at Christie’s Auction House, making it the second most expensive painting ever sold at auction, and marking the 10th time a piece of art has sold for over $100 million at auction. If you’ve never seen ‘Nu Couché’ by Amedeo Modigliani it’s basically a nude painting that appears to be a likeness of Liza Minnelli’s bush.

If you’re not familiar with Amedeo Modigliani’s work, don’t fret, he’s been dead since 1920. His paintings have been breaking records as of late though. I guess that the uber wealthy just love to have some wild bush hanging on their walls? Anywho, here’s that naked painting that someone paid $170.4 million for yesterday:

Sarah Begley of TIME reports:

A nude by Amedeo Modigliani sold for $170.4 million at Christie’s on Monday, becoming the second most expensive painting ever sold at auction, according to the New York Times.

The auction house need not have been concerned that the painting might be too sexual for some collectors, the New York Times reports; it’s in good company with the all-time top-selling painting, Picasso’s “Les Femmes d’Alger (Version ‘O’),” which is equally revealing (if less realistic).

They were concerned that collectors wouldn’t want Liza Minnelli’s bush hanging on their walls? Who wouldn’t want to look at this all day, every day…Is the likeness of this not worth $170+ million?

I guess the biggest question I have regarding this painting is how much money the person who purchased ‘Nu Couché’ by Amedeo Modigliani is worth. Was this like 1/10th of their net worth that they spent on a painting? Half? 1/100th? How much money do you have to have in the bank to feel comfortable purchasing a painting for $170 million?
