Only in Australia do we get to see footage of a great white shark eating and swallowing an adult sea lion, only to choke on it and wash up on shore two days later.
Everything about this screams ‘STRAYA! Everything…. The video above was posted on July 12th, the incident shows a great white shark feasting on an adult Australian sea lion. That’s not where this story ends though.
Flash forward to to today and the Department of Fisheries for Western Australia has released a statement on the incident:
The Department of Fisheries has concluded its investigation into the death of a White shark found washed ashore at Coronation Beach, about 28 kilometres north of Geraldton earlier this week.
Principal Research Scientist Dr Rory McAuley says the four-metre male shark had no visible signs of injury or disease, however, it appeared the shark had a large Australian sea lion stuck inside its throat.
Just another day in ‘Straya, swimming at the beach along side sharks so big they can fit adult frickin sea lions in their mouth (but not big enough to swallow them.
“This could explain why the shark was exhibiting such unusual behaviour in shallow waters off Coronation Beach. It is possible that the shark was trying to dislodge the blockage,” Dr McAuley said.
“Such a large object may have damaged the shark’s internal organs or impeded water flow into his gills, contributing to his death. Alternatively, the shark may have accidentally become stranded in his attempts to get rid of the obstruction.”
Remind me again why Australia is so competitive in the pool at the Summer Olympics? If I was ‘Strayan you likely couldn’t pay me to step foot in the ocean. Between these sharks, the blue ringed octopus, box jellys, it’s seriously the most dangerous body of water imaginable. Why even go swimming?
