Kid tries to get an Easy-Bake Oven version for boys

By / 12.04.12

Eighth grader McKenna Pope is a girl, the target demographic for the Easy-Bake Oven. But her four-year-old brother wants one, too. So she’s trying to get Easy-Bake Oven maker Hasbro to give the boys a shot in the world of tiny baked goods.

Hasbro

Pope started a Change.org petition in the hopes of convincing Hasbro senior management to make a version of the product just for boys.

“I want my brother to know that it’s not “wrong” for him to want to be a chef, that it’s okay to go against what society believes to be appropriate,” Pope writes.

“It truly saddens me that such a successful business would resort to conforming to society’s views on what boys do and what girls do.”

The Easy-Bake Oven is typically sold only in feminine colors, such as purple or pink. A trip to the Hasbro site for the Easy-Bake Oven seems to be anything but gender neutral.

You can see a video of Pope’s little brother talking about his plight below.

The petition currently has a little under 25,000 signatures.

I’m totally on board with this. In fact, I even felt the same way when I was growing up as the little guy. Not that I necessarily wanted to be a chef. But who doesn’t want to have cupcakes and brownies and whatever at the ready without having to turn on an oven? Hell, I’d probably take one now and I’m 28 years old.

Give this young man an Easy-Bake Oven in blue, Hasbro. The people have spoken. Support this girl’s crusade for equality and mediocre cupcakes for all!

[Thanks for the tip, Melissa]
