Dave Chappelle’s five-night run at Radio City Music Hall this month will put the comedian in the spotlight for the first time in almost a decade.
Dave Chappelle has made unannounced club appearances and done quick movie and TV spots here and there but for five nights in a row, under the big lights of the Big Apple, Chappelle attempt to remind the world why he’s the greatest comedic talent of his generation. The funniest, and most well paid, comic in the world will emerge from his decade long career hibernation.
Prior to the shows, Dave Chappelle sat down with GQ magazine to discuss “the funniest night on Earth.” One club, some of the biggest names in comedy, and a performance that will probably never happen again.
Dave Chappelle and the ‘Black Pack’
On a regular Wednesday night, Dave Chappelle dropped into the Comedy Cellar in New York for a surprise set, and invited a few audience members onstage to join him. Those audience members were close friends of Dave’s who had heard he might be dropping into the club. Dave Chappelle was joined on stage by Chris Rock, Kevin Hart, Marlon Wayans, Bill Bellamy and Questlove of The Roots.
The rest is comedy history. Here’s a small sample of what went on that night.
Bellamy: Kevin Hart walks out. And here comes Chris Rock. Then Dave was like, “Who else is in here?” That was rich. So then me and Marlon come up. People go goddamn crazy. And we just start passing the microphone, telling stories about each other. It was a Black Pack moment.
Kevin Hart: That crowd got something money can’t buy. They got authenticity.
Rock: Yeah, it was kind of a lovefest.
