Last July, off the coast of California, the Navy successfully shot a small drone out of the sky with a laser cannon on the back of the USS Ponce. On Monday the U.S. Navy released footage from the test, which involves the drone catching fire in the middle of the sky before crashing into the sea. Um, you guys? Star Wars in real life. This is badass.
According to The Verge, the Navy is aiming to "field and test a solid-state laser prototype" in early 2014 aboard the USS Ponce, "a transport vessel from the 1970s that was recently upgraded into a hi-tech floating base and is stationed in the Persian Gulf, in range of Iranian attack boats."
The future just keeps getting more and more awesome. Unless you're the bad guys.
