A few weeks ago, we told you about a foriegn exchange student at the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota having his Lamborghini Gallardo towed for a parking violation. Cars get towed all the time on college campuses, but this particular incident seemed extra special since it was a $200,000-plus Italian sports car owned by a student.
Exotic super cars are rare on most college campuses. After all, the lean college years are not synonymous with opulence. For most, it's not easy to financially justify owning a $100k+ gas guzzler while dishing out $200k over four years for tuition. Scrapping by on Ramen noodle dinners and donating plasma for beer money are engrained deep in the folklore of the American college experience. A few weeks after that post pinged around the Internet, however, a reader from George Washington University tipped us off to the school's culture of expensive, exotic cars on campus. The tipster is the founder of GWUcars.tumblr.com, a one-trick-pony Tumblr photo blog dedicated to the ridiculous student-owned cars at GWU.
Socioeconomically, GWU is a school with a rich-kid reputation. There's even a "Rich Kids' Problems" novelty Twitter account based on that premise that never took off. But the financial wealth of GWU's student body is beyond just the suburban upper-middle class wealth bracket of doctors, lawyers, and businessmen. "GWU's mix of Asian, Arab, and Jewish students who are extremely wealthy is insane," he explained via e-mail. "It's a very international school and most of the cars are Arab kids from countries like Qatar, Dubai, Jordan, Egypt, Kuwait, London, etc. Some kid's parents are presidents and are ruling families of Arab countries, mob bosses, international villains, etc." He declined to comment on which presidents, ruling families, mob bosses, or international villains, specifically, in respect to their privacy and security.
"Then there is a huge Asian population with many nice cars being driven by Korean and Chinese students. Then the smaller portion are Jewish kids with nice cars. Most aren't as ridiculous as the Arab or Asians, but you seen tons of blacked-out Range Rovers, X5s, and other BMWs."
The biggest day to show off your ride at GWU is on Thursday. There are no parties on campus, so the student body hits the three nearby night clubs: Josephine, Shadowroom, and Opera, "where these kids go every week and each spend between $200-$5,000 a night three days a week on table service and bottles." Acccording to our tipster, these clubs boast the campus's craziest car line up, "where they pay $40 to valet the cars in front."
At an academic institution where tuition alone is $44,103, with annual student costs with room and board reaching close to $60,000 a year, it's not a surprise that students come from the financial means to splurge for a nice car. "Most of these kids are really into cars and are fortunate enough to have their parents buy them for them." Our tipster points out, however, that "a lot of kids will have two cars." The school's car culture is not just relegated to social cliques with Big Man on Campus syndrome, either: "Everyone at GWU tries to pretend like they don't care about cars, but in reality it's all most of these kids care about..."
The viral success of GWUcars.tumblr.com reflects this. "In the last four days, the site has received 13,000 views. I've already heard kids talking outside of the club about it and how they wanted their cars on the site." So far, the site's snapshooters have captured a Ferrari, a Mercedes SLR 722 S, and a Porsche GTR 2 RS on campus (the student owner of the Porsche allegedly owns a Rolls Royce Ghost, too). Our tipster claims the site is only "1/100 of the cars seen on campus" adding that it's not unusual to see "kids hot boxing Rolls Royces and Aston Martins with Luis Vuitton interiors." An anonymous post from another student on the site inquires about two mysterious black and blue Maserati Quattroportes driven by Koreans around campus. There's plenty more to be pictured.
In the coming days, our tipster plans to launch CarsOnCampus.com for students elsewhere to send in photos of exotic student-owned cars at their schools. Meanwhile, enjoy a gallery of 14 posh super cars owned by GWU students. Click for the slideshow gallery.
