Now on to the tasting….

Slightly darker in color than Crown Royal Deluxe, the 80 proof XR is a rich amber with surprisingly light legs. Aromatically, you'll pick up some dried fruits, pear and vanilla. Like most Canadian whiskeys, the XR carries a strong essence of rye, but from palate to finish, it balances nicely with honey and pear notes leaving your mouth satisfied with sweet, spicy rye. Overall, the XR is a light enjoybale whiskey, but unless you're a rye lover, lacks some of the layers and complexities you might look for in a $100+ spirit. Grade: 8/10

At $129 per bottle, it's a tough investment for your everyday drinking whiskey. That said, for a special occasion or as a last minute Father's Day gift, you have yourself a nice find.
