Paul Thomas Anderson, the brilliant director who made "Boogie Nights," "Punch Drunk Love," and "There Will Be Blood," has a new film coming out this October 12: "The Master." What's it about? Well, the plot so far has been shrouded in secrecy, but rumor has it that it's loosely based on the beginnings of Scientology—and Philip Seymour Hoffman does bear more than a passing resemblance to L. Ron Hubbard. Hollywood should take this well.

"The Master" will also mark Joaquin Phoenix's first acting role since he pretended to lose it in "I'm Still Here," so his performance should be something to look out for. So far, we know both that he is playing a crazy person (quite a stretch), and that he has mastered the weird, curl the lip up look throughout the trailer—here, look at this screenshot:
