One of the better "this made my day" feelings out there often comes in the form of discovering something you simply know is going to be great. "Promised Land," directed by Gus Van Sant of "Good Will Hunting" fame, looks like exactly that.
Jim from The Office and Matt Damon writing a movie together? And starring in it? Gus Van Sant has always been a maverick, so he’s a perfect fit to direct this unusual story based on a piece by writer Dave Eggers. Promised Land is about Steve Butler, a salesman who travels to run-down towns in America’s heartland to buy hydraulic drilling rights for natural gas, which can have serious environmental repercussions. John Krasinski is a local at his latest stop who wants to stop it from happening. Interestingly enough, it was Krasinski who bought the rights to the story, and Damon originally wanted to direct before Van Sant was brought in. Should be interesting. Promised Land opens December 28th.
The trailer also looks to be arguing for something greater than just a dope movie--our tech and white collar dominated, post-industrial economy has seen many a landscape change over the past handful of decades, and the once great 'MERICAN agrarian society is arguably on the brink of extinction. By the looks of the preview, its an inevitable clash that looks every bit relevant as compelling. Cannot wait for this.
Film opens Decemeber 28th.
