Long-time viewers of Arrested Development will know that Fünke was never satisfied with just being an analrapist—he always harbored dreams of being an actor. The man even got painful hair plugs to really make his head shots pop. So now, with the new season of the show fast approaching, Tobias is putting out the feelers to restart his dormant acting career (which ended, roughly, with his decision to hire a broke Carl Weathers as an acting coach).
Step one: This sizzle reel, tweeted out by Ron Howard this morning. Tobias is pioneering something called "Insert Me Anywhere," which, as you can see in the sizzle reel, means that Tobias has already filmed scenes as an "average fellow," "action hero," and "cowpoke," leaving the director to just place him in front of a green screen. This unbelievable website explains more. (It contains an advertisement for "ManGo Juice": "It's like having a mango in your mouth!"
In all seriousness, this is all so, so fucking hilarious. I have to admit I was a little bit worried after seeing the trailer a couple of days ago—I didn't find it laugh-out-loud funny, and the uncomfortable deleted scene between Buster and Lucille also didn't inspire confidence. Plus, I thought it wasn't going to be a wise decision to dedicate each episode to just focusing on a single character. Arrested Development was at its best when each family member played off each other. (Think the amazing party scenes, or anything else filmed in the penthouse.) Would we get scenes of Gob, Lucille, and Buster all doing the chicken dance in front of Michael?
I shouldn't have been worried. May 26 can't come soon enough.
