Last night’s episode of Family Guy featured a shocking death. And not some bit player character either. This one was a real doozy. Spoilers ahead.
Last night’s episode, titled “Life of Brian,” featured the beloved family dog voiced by Seth McFarlane killed off after being hit by a car.
Showrunner Steve Callaghan told E! that the idea blew up in the writer’s room when they decided they wanted to change the dynamic of the show a bit while also keeping things in the realm of real life possibility.
“It seemed more in the realm of a reality that a dog would get hit by a car, then if one of the kids died,” Callaghan said. “As much as we love Brian, and as much as everyone loves their pets, we felt it would be more traumatic to lose one of the kids, rather than the family pet.”
The show also introduced a new talking dog, Vinny, who Callaghan calls “rough around the edges.”
People on Twitter were super pissed off about the decision but the Family Guy crew doesn’t seem likely to change course, despite the massive “Jump the Shark” potential. Here’s a tribute FOX posted to its Animation Domination YouTube channel.
