Last Comic Standing 2014: Comic Comeback gives second chance with online vote

“Comic Comeback” is giving eliminated comics a second chance in the competition for the Last Comic Standing2014 crown.

According to a new press release, Last Comic Standing 2014 is kicking off a new “Comic Comeback” online competition. Starting June 19, fans of the NBC series and comics a second chance to appear on the show.

Here’s how the Last Comic Standing 2014 Comic Comeback competition work<s/a>:

“After the second semi-final round airs on June 19, two eliminated contestants – selected by the theater audience at the taping – will kick off a head-to-head standup battle.  Fans can watch video of the comics’ exclusive online standup routines, vote for their favorite at this website or on Twitter with #ComicComeback – and share their vote with friends.”

Each week, the winner of the head-to-head competition will move on to face the next comic eliminated from the show. The competition will continue until one comic emerges from the online face offs. That comic will then punch a ticket to the show finals. It’s not a literal ticket. This isn’t Willy Wonka.

For those familiar with the show Top Chef, the Comic Comeback is very similar to Last Chance Kitchen where eliminated contestants cook against each other online. The winner goes to the Top Chef finale. Last Comic Standing is adopting the idea.

Comic Comeback has its first competitor

The first comic has already been chosen and it’s Nick Guerra.

I personally like the “second chance” angle because stand-up is so subjective. Stand-up is incredibly dependent on the crowd. Some nights, some comics aren’t funny to THAT audience. It might not be his/her audience. The Comic Comeback option leaves puts the decision in the hands of a much wider audience.

People will argue that online voting turns it into a popularity contest. The entire show is a popularity contest, much like any reality show, and comics with a larger fanbase or social media accounts will win. “Well, so and so has 200K Facebook fans. That’s not fair.” It’s actually 100% fair. Those 200K are saying “I feel this person is funny” by clicking the Facebook like button. It’s a vote before the Comic Comeback vote.

Comic Comeback starts June 19th on the official NBC Last Comic Standing website.
