That One Time Hugh Hefner Was Dosed With LSD During A Grateful Dead Show

In my imagination, the late ’60s and ’70s were the best decades ever. The music was great, the livin’ was easy, and you could be wild and weird without worrying about being called out for it on social media. Even if you were a celebrity.

Coming out of acid-soaked San Francisco, The Grateful Dead are the poster children for unhinded ’60s weirdness. On Conan last night after he told everyone to go watch David Letterman, Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann came out to talk about his book, Deal: My Three Decades of Drumming, Dreams, and Drugs with the Grateful Dead. He told a tale about the time legendary LSD chemist Owsley Stanley dosed Hugh Hefner during a Grateful Dead set on Hef’s Playboy television show. And all this was perfectly legal at the time.

Here’s footage of said 1969 performance where all this went down. The “St. Stephen” is particularly sick. Look at how much of a baby-face Bobby is! Time is such a cruel mistress.

What an awesome, weird time to be alive. Here’s part two of the interview. Bill does a nice job paraphrasing Jerry at the end to Conan: “We’re like licorice. Not everybody likes licorice, but the people who like licorice really like licorice.”
