‘Macadelic’ Shows the Deeper Side of Mac Miller

By / 03.26.12

The mixtape continuously utilizes drugs as a reference to his trials and tribulations with girls.  On “Vitamins” he takes us through a steamy bang session in which a girl takes him for a hell of a ride:

“Sat me down told me we should have some fun / there aint no body around / she got this crazy pill the other day when she was on her way to work / told me it'd make my problems go away” – “that don't sound bad / down the hatch” – “I aint really into drugs but fuck it / Imma take a trip and Imma love it”

Lyrically, Mac delivers some of his best work yet.  Desperado is exciting from the opening bar, with Mac spitting hard and fast: “Life is good sometimes, but it just doesn’t last / A bunch of tracks, you see this mic is like my punchin’ bag / Rock n’ Roll, drugs and cash, you softer than a bubble bath”

“It's like the story of someone who is growing up, trying to figure out who he is and trying to figure out what he's supposed to do in the world and how he's gonna change it,” Mac said in a recent interview with MTV's Mixtape Daily. “I think it's a great piece because it's a great part of my career, it's a great time right now and I feel like I been making mixtapes for five years, so this one is very special to me.”

The one Cardo-produced track on the album, “Ignorant” is especially fun to listen to, as Mac references notable public figures  “Being rich thats fun as hell but these bitches come they under spells / Yo Mr. Jobs you see I’m a Mac, but I’m rollin’ deep like Adele / I’m Robert Downey Jr., you more like Steve Carell”

I.D. Labs engineered most of the beats, and notable features include Kendrick Lamar, Iman Omari, Juicy J, and Cam'ron.  Overall, it's clear that Mac did and said everything that was on his mind without holding back, and the mixtape certainly has something for everyone.

“I was trying to make a complete project, but on this project, all I wanted to do is just say what was on my mind,” he said. “I just worried about saying what I wanted to say, and I felt like there were a lot of things that I wanted to get off my chest, and this mixtape was the way to do it.”

This mixtape, along with Wiz Khalifa's Taylor Allderdice, are must-download tapes for this spring.
