San Dimas High School Football Rules! Wait, is it still cool to like football? The last time we saw Bill S. Preston, Esq. and Ted “Theodore” Logan was 1991’s Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey. Think on that for a little bit, dudes: that’s two decades that have gone by without a single update from the men known as Wyld Stallyns. There have been rumors in Hollywood that a Bill & Ted 3 was in the offing, and recent updates have indicated that it’s closer to happening than ever.

Original writers Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon have turned in the script, and now an interview with Keanu Reeves in GQ lets us in on a little bit of the plot. Take it away, Keanu:

One of the plot points is that these two people have been crushed by the responsibility of having to write the greatest song ever written and to change the world. And they haven’t done it. So everybody is kind of like: “Where is the song?” The guys have just drifted off into esoterica and lost their rock. And we go on this expedition, go into the future to find out if we wrote the song, and one future “us” refuses to tell us, and another future “us” blames us for their lives because we didn’t write the song, so they’re living this terrible life. In one version we’re in jail; in another we’re at some kind of highway motel and they hate us.

Sounds good to me. Possible alternate futures are a lot of fun, and this promises the genial absurdity that the series trades on. I’m going to see what I can dig up to find out more.

In addition, a director has been attached to the project. Vulture is reporting that Dean Parisot, the man behind the underrated Galaxy Quest, has been pegged to helm the film. This thing has been a dream project from the start, with Matheson and Solomon writing the script on spec (that is, unpaid) to make sure that it’s the Bill & Ted story that they want to tell.
