Star Wars 7 coming in 2015. If we live that long. Well, this was unexpected. While the rest of the country was reeling from the effects of Hurricane Sandy yesterday, the House of Mouse announced that they were making yet another big acquisition: Lucasfilm. Disney will pay $4.05 billion for all of the studio’s properties, which have herefore been owned by George Lucas. Let’s be frank: it’s not like he’s doing anything with them.

Lucas released a statement in which he said that it was “now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers,” and Disney followed it up with the shocking news that Star Wars 7 was now on the docket for 2015. If you remember, there were originally supposed to be nine Star Wars movies – the original three, then the prequels, and then three more set in the future. But when the heavily CGI prequels were savaged by critics, Lucas pulled away from the franchise. Speculation is already bubbling about who will take over the new movies – Lucas will serve as a consultant, but the new blood will have a significant amount of control. Some names being floated include Brad Bird, most recently of Mission Impossible – Ghost Protocol and Joss Whedon.

In addition to the Star Wars property, Lucasfilm has some other gems that Disney intends to exploit, most notably Indiana Jones. This is obviously a smart business strategy for Disney, as their acquisition of Marvel COmics in 2009 produced multiple hit movies, including this summer’s The Avengers. Who would have thought, ten years ago, that they’d own some of the nerd world’s most treasured properties?
