Over $1 million worth of fake guitars seized in New Jersey

If you recently order a guitar online, now might be a good time to check its authenticity.

According to Gothamist, over $1 million in fake guitars were discovered by US Custom agents at a facility in Jersey City.

The guitars bore the trademarks of major name guitar companies like Gibson, Les Paul, Paul Reed Smith, and Martin, but “were far more shoddily constructed and packaged than the real thing.”

After more digging through packages, authorities reportedly discovered over 180 counterfeit guitars with fake Epiphone, Fender, Taylor, and Ernie Ball trademarks emblazoned on their bodies.

According to officials, these guitars amassed an estimated retail value of over $1,000,000. Authorities say they were all purchased from the same unnamed website, and were manufactured in China, with a retail value of $200 to $500 each. Real guitars of that caliber, however, can run anywhere from $2,000 to $54,000.

All of the guitars will be destroyed…with some tasty licks! Then literally destroyed.
