The interview isn't great—Tom Snyder is all over the place and Lorne Michaels and Chevy Chase dominate the discussion—but for history's sake, this clip recorded before the first-ever, George Carlin-hosted episode of Saturday Night Live is worth a watch. No one really know what the show would be. It was framed as a throwback to the old live variety shows of the '50s, not the subversive and ground-breaking late-night show it really was.
And Lorne? He's developed a reputation for being a mercurial taskmaster over the last 40 years, but here he's charismatic and funny. It's easy to forget that he got his start in comedy writing, too.
Chase just dominates the rest of the cast, who barely get a chance to speak. Which might have been a good thing, actually, because Belushi looks out of it.
