This summer's blockbusters weren't great—good thing I wrote thousands of words previewing them in April!—but it's okay to still hold out a little bit of hope for Elysium. Not only have its trailers been visually stunning (and very badass), Matt Damon has a reputation for picking action movies that provide a little substance around the explosions, and director Neill Blomkamp is responsible for maybe the best sci-fi movie of the last five years, District 9. What makes Blomkamp increasingly rare among the CGI meth addicts who directed the past few summers' blockbusters is his emphasis on realism—sure, Damon is shooting a robot here, but it's filmed like a war documentary. It actually feels grounded in reality.
