When Joaquin Phoenix went on David Letterman's show in February 2009 as a bearded, inaudible actor-turned-rapper, BroBible was just a couple weeks old. In one of my first posts as editor, I wrote the following the next morning:
If you caught last night's "Letterman," you saw train-wreck Joaquin Phoenix acting like a complete, drugged-out-of-his-mind wannabe rapper, mumbling his words, refusing to answer questions, chewing gum and then sticking it under Dave's desk. At one point, noting Phoenix's beard, Dave asked, "So tell me about your time with the Unabomber," before concluding the interview later with, "Joaquin, I'm sorry you couldn't be here tonight." So just which drugs was Phoenix on? Probably nothing. Word is that he's working on a moc*mentary with Casey Affleck all about celebrity and fame. (Think Borat or Bruno but with a beard.) We're not sure Dave Letterman was the bridge to burn (think he'll ever get invited back?), but now at least our interest is piqued.
Turns out Dave did invite him back, last night, as part of the promotion of the already open "I'm Still Here." As we all know by now, Phoenix and Affleck have copped to the character and the movie being fakes, all part of an elaborate commentary on the nature of celebrity in our culture. Letterman was pretty adamant last night that although he wasn't in on the joke, he caught on immediately that it was one.
Last night's reunion is a must-watch. The two-part videos are after the jump.
