An Unrecognizable Johnny Depp Plays Boston Crime Lord Whitey Bulger In This ‘Black Mass’ Trailer

Whitey Bulger is undoubtedly the most infamous violent criminal in South Boston history. When Police finally hunted him down in Santa Monica, California in June 2011, he was indicted for 19 murders, including charges of racketeering, extortion, and narcotics distribution.

Black Mass details the true story of Whitey (played by Johnny Depp) and his tumultuous relationship with the FBI after agent John Connolly (Joel Edgerton) recruited him in the 1970s to take down a common enemy: the Italia mafia. The alliance spiraled out of control, allowing Whitey to consolidate power and rule with an iron fist, while the FBI smeared its name when the New England media exposed criminal actions by federal, state, and local law enforcement officials tied to Bulger.

The story is fascinating and having grown up in the area myself, my dad and his friends love to talk about Whitey when they’re drunk. “He would buy ya motha groceries before killin’ ya sista!” Go to bed, dad. You’re drunk.

Hopefully Johnny Depp can resurrect from his slump of sub-par films and kill this role. Pun intended.
