The Best Video Game Of 2013 Is Getting An Updated Version

Don’t have time to keep track of all the latest updates from your favorite video games? Don’t worry, bro! We gotchu. Every week, we’ll be recapping the biggest gaming news, updates, trailers and more in one handy guide.

VIDEO GAMES NEWS FOR OCTOBER 24th

If you didn’t know that a live-action Halo series was coming for the Xbox console, then, boy, we’re happy to be the ones to tell you. A while ago, it was announced that Ridley Scott (yup, the guy who directed Alien and Blade Runner) would executive produce Halo: Nightfall, which stars actor Mike Colter as legendary manhunter Agent Locke, a brand-new character in the Halo universe who will feature prominently in the upcoming Halo 5: Guardians game.

The series will debut this November 11 on Xbox’s The Halo Channel and our first look at footage came this week with the trailer. Watch it below:

As depicted, Halo: Nightfall sees Locke leading his team of ONI agents (they’re like a CGB-type agents) on a seemingly routine investigative mission on another planet, but they are soon exposed to something much more serious. There’s “a compound that kills humans and nothin’ else,” there’s something that snatches soldiers out of the shadows like something from Riddick or Paranormal Activity. Yeah, seems like a good time.

For more footage and intel on Halo: Nightfall, check out the behind-the-scenes video below.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Trailer

The opening cinematic sequence to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has landed, and it’s full of all those medieval battle sequences, sword hacking, magic juju and a raven propelling itself through the head of an attacker that you’ve been waiting to see again. Eat your heart out, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters! …Seriously!

As with the other two games in the series, The Witcher 3 follows Geralt, one of the last remaining “witchers,” vagabond monster hunters with supernatural abilities. (Seems like an oxymoron, no? Magic beings on the hunt for other magical beings. But whatever, it’s an awesome series, so no worries.) This time around, he’s hunting his ex-love, the sorceress Yennefer. (Wouldn’t it be something if she turned out to be Cartman’s hand screaming “Yennifer Lopez!” and talking about “taco-flavored keeses”?) The game doesn’t hit shelves until February 15, but so far it looks pretty awesome.

Apparently the best things in life come in fads, and while Halo: Nightfall is ready to debut this November, the live-action Dead Rising movie has already begun filming. Legendary Studios launched its digital division to produce original movies for streaming platforms, and its first project is Dead Rising: Watchtower, which will stream on something called Crackle. It’s basically a bootleg version of Hulu – it has a library of movies to stream and it’s developing original programming … but, seriously, how crazy is that name?

Yup, that’s Jesse Metcalfe, the guy from Desperate Housewives and Dallas your girlfriend kept talking about for years but then stopped when everyone forgot about him. If you’ve never played Dead Rising, there are now three games in the series (excluding those re-envisioned and spinoff installments) and the first one saw a zombie outbreak occur as the only known vaccine failed miserably. The movie will take place between games 2 and 3 … but that doesn’t mean anything to you, really, if you haven’t played them. Just be aware it’s another zombie movie based on a popular franchise.

Rob Riggle is also a part of the cast, so there’s that.

Mortal Kombat X

And if you don’t think two video-games-adapted-into-movies-tv-shows is a fad, how about three of ‘em? Another Mortal Kombat live-action digital series is in the works. We already have Mortal Kombat: Legacy, so who’s ready for Mortal Kombat X? The new digital series is said to be “in association” with the Mortal Kombat X video game coming in April, and it will “feature some of the franchise’s most iconic characters as well as a new generation of fighters.”

Alien Isolation

Alien: Isolation is proving to be one of the coolest and horrifying games of the year. How could it not when it’s based in the xenomorph/facehugger universe? Well, it’s about to get even cooler with the first of the five planned DLC (that’s “downloaded content”) additions in Survivor Mode dropping on October 28. It’s called Corporate Lockdown and it centers on Ransome, a Seegson executive who attempts to steal classified information from the company and escape on the Torrens. Of course, an alien appears and goes a’hunting.

The Last Of Us

Remember how awesome The Last of Us was? It was pretty much the game to buy in 2013, and everyone loved it so much that a remastered edition was released this past summer for the PS4. Now, a Game of the Year edition is coming with all the major DLC releases: Left Behind, a single-player prequel chapter into Ellie’s past; Abandoned Territories & Reclaimed Territories, featuring eight multiplayer maps; and Grounded Mode, a more difficult single-player mode.

The downside? It’s only been announced in Europe. We’re still holding out hope that a US release will be announced soon. How can it not?!

The Legend Of Korra Launch Trailer

If there’s one show on Nickelodeon that’s acceptable to watch, it would be The Legend of Korra because it’s friggin awesome, which made the release of the first Legend of Korra video game on the PlayStation Network so friggin exciting. I got a chance to play it, though, and it’d probably be just as satisfying as a mobile game. That said, if you secretly love Korra and don’t want your friends seeing you buy this game, this is for you. Watch the launch trailer for it above.

The Walking Dead: Season Two

Two other big games that were released this week were Telltale’s The Walking Dead: Season 2 and Samurai Warriors 4. If you haven’t played the first one and you’re not a Walking Dead fan, you’re still in for a treat. If you haven’t played it and you are a fan, then you’re as dumb as you look.

Telltale’s version of The Walking Dead takes place in the same universe as Robert Kirkman’s comic book series and follows Clementine, a young girl who becomes an orphan as a result of the zombie apocalypse. This is one of those games where every one of your actions creates a varied reaction, and it’s the ultimate video game experience for fans.

Samurai Warriors 4

As for Samurai Warriors 4, the launch trailer shows it to be pretty much everything fans of the series are looking craving – crazy rock music, oddly sexy Japanese historic figures and dramatic war cries that devolve into sword fights.

Rest In Peace

On a sadder note, a professional gamer died last week while playing in a tournament. And who said you don’t have to condition to play video games?

Terrance Moore, known among his competitors as “PushaTee,” during a Super Arcade tournament. But what’s remarkable is how affected the gaming community was. Tributes have been piling up online, while a donations campaign was created to aide Moore’s family. So far, the campaign has raised over $9,000.

Watch the tribute to PushaTee below.

Xbox One Updates

A ton of really cool updates have come for the Xbox One system, including the personalization of your backgrounds and profiles. Finally, my letter-writing and Reddit forum trolling has paid off!

Among the updates, some of the coolest features are the Live TV Trending and Twitter TV Trending tabs. The first one pops up in OneGuide and shows you the top 20 most watched TV shows, which are whittled down to which shows are available to you. The second one is just as it sounds – you can see what TV shows airing live are currently trending on Twitter. It’s the small things in life that really get us going.

Here’s a rundown of all the updates.
