1 Out Of Every 5 College Students Has Experienced ‘Exploding Head Syndrome’ — Have You?

I read the original story too quickly and thought it said “experience explosive head” and thought “not since that chick in Cancun!” Heyyyoooo, blowjob humor.

New research published in the Journal of Sleep Research found that 18% — basically 1 out of every 5 — college students interviewed said they’ve experienced “exploding head syndrome” at least once at school.

That’s crazy! Also, um, what the hell is exploding head syndrome?

Exploding head syndrome is a “psychological phenomenon in which (people) are awakened by abrupt loud noises, even the sensation of an explosion in their head,” according to a report in the WSU News.

It tends to happen while going to sleep and is mostly harmless, but pretty scary if it’s happening to you. And, according to the study, it can result in clinical consequences such as feelings of distress and/or impairment. The study recommends more research should be done.

Here’s the scariest part — I’ve had this happen! I’ll be dozing off to sleep, in that haze where I’m thinking of the craziest shit like what if we all went to work in toboggans and making sex with the girl in the Education Connection ads and then BOOM! it sounds like gun fires next to my ear. I’ll wake up thinking the world is ending but there wasn’t any sound at all, only in my brain. It scares the shit out of me and chases the Education Connection girl off for good.

Ever had that happen? Ever had an “exploding head” moment?
