Nina Davuluri becomes first Indian-American Miss America; racism ensues

Nina Davuluri was crowned Miss America 2014 last night and became the first Indian-American to be crowned Miss America in the history of the pageant. Of course, it took American racists about 0.2 seconds after her crowning to start complaining about it.

A few of the more choice complaints on Twitter were caught by CNN

“If you’re #Miss America you should have to be American,” said one.

“WHEN WILL A WHITE WOMAN WIN #MISSAMERICA? Ever??!!” screamed another.

“Well they just picked a Muslim for Miss America. That must’ve made Obama happy. Maybe he had a vote,” vented one person.

“Miss America? You mean Miss 7-11,” tweeted Jalin Leatherman

Amazing, right? Well, even people paid to talk on TV got into the act, though they were a little less obvious with their venom.

“The liberal Miss America judges won’t say this – but Miss Kansas lost because she actually represented American values. #missamerica.” That was Todd Starnes, host of Fox News and Commentary.

While we would have loved to have seen Miss Kansas win, just for her sheer badassness (is too a word), I can’t see liberal judges voting against a tattooed, gun-loving woman.

None of this should really come as a surprise though. When Rima Fakih of Lebanese descent won in 2010, the racists came out of the woodwork then too. It’s just what they do.

Frankly I’m more upset that Nina Davuluri is a Miss New York. Why do they always get all the good stuff?
