most overrated women 2012

This ranking of the most overrated celebrity women isn't a "hot list" (see the Guyism 100 for that). These are ladies who we feel are overrated in the eyes of fans and the media. Yes, it's possible to be beautiful and still be overrated. In fact, many of these women are gorgeous, they just don't deserve as much attention as they get. So let's put that characteristic aside for today's discussion.

This also doesn't mean we don't like all of these women. In fact, we love many of them. This is about hype. Using our super scientific formulas, equations, graphs and flowcharts we compared the ACTUAL HYPE that each celebrity receives versus the DESERVED HYPE we feel they should be receiving. The bigger the difference between the two scores, the higher they are on this list. Got it? Okay, let's go.

Photo: YouTube

Yes, we know, she won an Academy Award. In 2000. 12 years ago. Since then she's done 19 more movies including... well, Ocean's Eleven and... Ocean's Twelve, and, oh, Charlie Wilson's War. Nothing close to an Academy Award nomination in the bunch.

Photo: YouTube

Nicki Minaj has talent. Unfortunately she's now about as well know for all her "shocking" outfits as she is for her music. But hey it worked for Lady Gaga and somehow Nicki has managed to convince at least one segment of society that she's one of the five most desirable women in the world, so it must be working. Hell, she even has a Pepsi ad. Wonder where she'd be if she had strictly relied on her talent?

Photo: YouTube

Lea Michele has been on Glee since 2009 and apparently that's enough for most people because other than that she hasn't done anything but make an appearance in the critical flop New Year's Eve. The power of the Gleeks is strong.

Photo: YouTube

Remember Batman Begins? Back in 2005? Of course you do. There was a sequel you know? And another coming out this year? Big blockbusters all. Unfortunately, Katie Holmes was and will not be in any of those sequels. Yet we still have tabloids covering her regularly for some reason. Her Wikipedia page says it best: "She achieved worldwide recognition for her marriage to Tom Cruise."

Photo: YouTube

Remember when Christina Ricci got all kinds of awards and nominations as a young actress? Back in the 1990s? Well, she's 32 now and her last real nomination for acting of any kind (no, Teen Choice awards don't count) was 14 years ago for The Opposite of Sex. She's been in 17 movies last 10 years; see how many can you name.

Photo: YouTube

The average box office gross of the last 10 movies Cameron Diaz has appeared in is over $107 million. What? Is this possible? Oh, $238 million for Shrek Forever After and $321 million for Shrek the Third are included in that number. Take those out and it's a $62 million average. Now take out those not involving big time co-stars like Tom Cruise and Ashton Kutcher and it's $56 million. I think you see where this is headed.

Photo: YouTube

If it weren't for the Pirates of the Caribbean movies would you even know who Keira Knightley is? Name another movie she's been in. C'mon, she's had a starring role in 14 other movies. So what if 10 of them failed to make even $40 million at the box office, she's a big star, people.

Photo: YouTube

January Jones plays Betty Draper on Mad Men. She also played Betty Draper, as an assassin, in the movie Unknown. Then she played Betty Draper, in an Emma Frost costume, in X-Men: First Class. We don't know what she played in Seeking Justice, but hey, Nicolas Cage was in it!

Photo: YouTube

Remember when Christina Aguilera was known for having one of the best voices in the music industry, circa 2000? Now she's a judge on The Voice. Why? Maybe because her last album tanked and sent her label into a panic. Oh, and there was that whole national anthem thing too. American Idol had Paula Abdul about a decade after her last hit so Xtina being on The Voice at this point in time makes pretty good sense when you think about it.

Photo: YouTube

Avril Lavigne is best known for being a "rebellious" teen singer who represented a whole segment of her peers looking for someone to speak for them. She's 27 now and appears to still be trying to appeal to that audience. It isn't working. Time for her to stop buying her clothes from Hot Topic, lose three or four pounds of eyeliner, and start putting some of her talent to better use.

Photo: YouTube

Elizabeth Hurley has a recurring role on Gossip Girl that she earned by, umm, her amazing portayal of the devil in Bedazzled (2000) and the fact that she has her own line of beachwear?

Photo: YouTube

Britney Spears is the sixth most powerful celebrity in the world, according to Forbes. So why is she now a judge on the American version of The X Factor? (Well, for now at least.) Perhaps it's because her album sales have gone from 10 million in 1999 to 9 million to 4 million to 3 million to 1.4 million, to 1 million in 2011 - her lowest selling album to date.

Photo: YouTube

Richards was in Wild Things 1998. Then she had her own reality show in 2008 and 2009. Then she was on... ah, here we go, Blue Mountain State in 2010 and 2011. Yet thanks to the train wreck that is her ex-husband she's still on television.

Photo: YouTube

Ashley Tisdale was one of the stars of those High School Musical movies that did so well with the kids between 2006 and 2008. Since leaving the Disney HSM hype machine she's done Hellcats, a short-lived show on The CW. Yet we still get to read all about how her relationship with her boyfriend is going and see her trying to sell us swimwear.

Photo: YouTube

Why is Sienna Miller famous again? For dating Jude Law? Even though she isn't with him anymore? She's been in 14 films, can you name one? G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra? Moving on.

Photo: YouTube

Amanda Bynes got arrested for DUI last month. This was news. EVERYWHERE. Granted Teen People named her one of "25 Hottest Stars Under 25"...in 2006. Since then she's been in, well, not much: Hairspray, Sydney White (?), some Lifetime movie, and had a part in Easy A. How about the next time she gets popped by John Law (and it will happen) we all just ignore it, okay? Thanks.

Photo: YouTube

Taylor Momsen used to be famous for being on Gossip Girl. Then she left the show and started touring with a band and dressing what we assume she feels is provocatively. She hasn't fooled many Americans but Europeans voted her the 29th sexiest woman on the planet. Silly Euros...

Photo: YouTube

Adrianne Curry was the first winner of America's Next Top Model in 2003, which she parlayed into marriage to Peter Brady and a reality show called My Fair Brady (which ended in 2008, by the way). She has around 341,000 followers on Twitter. Why? We have no idea.

Photo: YouTube

Zooey Deschanel is the queen of hipster nation. She's so quirky! That's the only explanation we have for why she's so popular. Did you know she's appeared in 34 films and TV shows since 1998? Name five (10 if you're a hipster). And don't get us started on the Siri ad.

Photo: YouTube

Hayden Panettiere is best known for dating Wladimir Klistchko. Wait, no, we mean for dating Jets wide receiver Scotty McKnight. No, that's not it either. Oh yes, for playing cheerleader Claire Bennet on the TV series Heroes - a show that ended two years ago. That's it. So which will come first? A new athlete boyfriend or an acting role in something relevant? And why do so many people care about either one?

Photo: YouTube

Miley Cyrus, as we all know, made her fame in the Disney machine as Hannah Montana. Now she's 19, no longer Hannah, and was just in a movie, LOL, that made $46,500 nationwide its opening weekend. (Note: The Avengers made just a hair less than that - in each theater it appeared in.) Plus her last album Can't Be Tamed sold about half of what her previous album did, which might indicate that perhaps her Hannah Montana fans have grown up, and moved on.

Photo: YouTube

Beverly Hills, 90210 went off the air in the year 2000. We repeat, in the year 2000. SIX YEARS later this somehow qualified her to have not one, but two reality shows. And her autobiography, sTORI Telling, debuted at #1 on the New York Times Best Seller list in 2008! Don't we have more important and more talented people to pay attention to these days?

Photo: YouTube

Wait, Jersey Shore is still on the air? MTV has announced that the series will return for a sixth season? Really? Why?

Photo: YouTube

Did you know that Kristin Cavallari, who used to be on Laguna Beach (2004-2005) and The Hills (2009-2010), is pregnant with Bears quarterback Jay Cutler's baby? Surely you do. It's really important news that we must be updated on at least once or twice a week by the celebrity press.

Photo: YouTube

Remind us why Emma Roberts is famous again? Oh, right, she's the daughter of actor Eric Roberts and the niece of Julia Roberts (also on this list - the rare family double!). What's that? She was on that kids show Unfabulous, from 2004 to 2007? Okay, now we understand.

Photo: YouTube

Maria Menounos hosts the TV show Extra. That's it. That's what she does. She's a TV show host. But thanks to her looking great in a bikini, her willingness to share that fact with loads of Twitter pictures, and the fact that she's a big fan of sports teams near New York she was on this season's Dancing With The Stars. She even got to wrestle in a match at WrestleMania XXVIII.

Photo: YouTube

Kate Middleton, excuse me, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, is the wife of Prince William, Duke of Cambridge. Why anyone outside of England and it's territories gives a rat's ass about this is a mystery.

Photo: YouTube

Quick, name three films starring Malin Akerman. Happythankyoumoreplease? Elektra Luxx? The Bang Bang Club? The Romantics? Okay, how about Watchmen? And yet she was on the cover of not one, but two magazines this past month.

Photo: YouTube

Anna Kournikova basically quit playing competitive tennis in 2003. And she wasn't even all that competitive (ESPN called her one of the "25 Biggest Sports Flops of the Past 25 Years"). But that didn't stop her from getting a gig as a celebrity trainer on NBC's The Biggest Loser in 2011 - eight full years after hanging up her racket.

Photo: YouTube

Nicole Scherzinger's resume (in chronological order): Lead singer for The Pussycat Dolls: the 80th most successful musical act of the 2000s. Solo artist with one album, Killer Love, which peaked at number eight - in the UK (it was never released in the US). Won the tenth season of Dancing with the Stars. Was a judge on the first season of the US version of The X Factor. The arrow hasn't exactly been pointing up.

Photo: YouTube

See Minaj, Nicki. Only with less talent. Yet we get stories like "Kesha Uses Eyeliner Pencil as Lipstick." And people care about it for some unknown reason.

Photo: YouTube

Everyone remembers Elisha Cuthbert as Jack Bauer's daughter on the FOX series 24, a role she began in 2001 when she was 18 and played off and on for 10 years. She now appears on the ABC comedy Happy Endings, which has somehow managed to survive two seasons despite dismal ratings. That's pretty much her whole resume.

Photo: YouTube

Kelly Brook came to fame for being one of those sexy British lasses that posed for lad magazines with her top off. Since she quit posing topless for money she's more famous than ever, landing modeling contracts with Lynx and Reebok, and getting her own line of swimwear. And that's because she... acted in the film Piranha 3D and has been on a several reality TV shows?

Photo: YouTube

LeAnn Rimes used to be known for being a very good singer with multi-platinum album sales before she even turned 20. Now she's best known for being overly chatty/bizarre on Twitter and for her odd relationship with her husband's ex-wife. She was already pretty damn famous so the question is, why is she now doing all the things that the "famous for being famous" stoop to doing?

Photo: YouTube

Why is Kelly Osbourne still the subject of media attention? We kind of understood when The Osbournes was on the air, but the show ended seven years ago, people. Even with that credential on her resume, being on the show has now qualified her to do what exactly? The next thing you know Brooke Hogan will be going into wrestling. Aww shit.

Photo: YouTube

Not a week goes by in which we don't see the alleged 17 year-old Courtney Stodden, wife of 51 year-old actor Doug Hutchinson, in an age-inappropriate photo shoot or video. Never before, and hopefully never again, will we see pedophilia exploited for monetary gain like we've seen from these two. Maybe when she turns 18 on August 29th they'll disappear? Fingers crossed.

Photo: YouTube

Rachel Bilson came to fame playing Summer Roberts on The O.C. That was from 2003 to 2007. Five years later she's on The CW in the show Hart of Dixie. In between she was in the films Waiting for Forever, New York, I Love You, and Jumper. With a resume like that it's easy to see why she's getting plum gigs hawking expensive ice cream bars.

Photo: YouTube

Friday Night Lights made Minka Kelly as household name. Unfortunately for her the show ended three years ago. But she did do the film The Roommate, and had a recurring role on Parenthood. Plus she was a lead character on the Charlie's Angels reboot, which made it... through... four episodes... before ABC pulled the plug on production. Oh, and she dated Derek Jeter. None of this is making for a great resume, is it?

Photo: YouTube

Jessica Biel became famous for her role as Mary Camden on the TV show 7th Heaven. That show went off the air in 2006. The last 10 films she has appeared in have had a paltry average box office gross of around $50 million (and that's with two of them making over $100 million). Plus, one of those movies, Powder Blue, went straight to DVD even though Biel was completely topless in it for the first time on film.

Photo: YouTube

Here are the last 10 movies Eva had a starring role in: Last Night, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, The Women, The Spirit, Live!, Ghost Rider, Cleaner, We Own the Night, The Wendell Baker Story, and Hitch. Quite a list.

Photo: YouTube

Sarah Silverman starred in The Sarah Silverman Program on Comedy Central from 2007 to 2010. After it went off the air there was a reported bidding war between multiple networks for her services. NBC won. She signed a deal and made a pilot in which the network would have to pay a large some of money if it wasn't aired. It wasn't aired.

Photo: YouTube

Paris Hilton is still famous. She's still getting invited to parties where celebrities are in attendance. The media is still covering her every stupid move and she actually has a music album coming out - her second. Her second! Granted, she is the standard bearer for how to become famous utilizing a sex tape, but damn, enough is enough.

Photo: YouTube

Carmen Electra is famous for... hang on a second... ummm... hmmm... I guess for being Carmen Electra. And maybe for being on Baywatch in the late '90s. And now she's going to appear on a TV show that will air in primetime on Fox called The Choice proving that its almost as hard to become not famous as it is to become famous in the first place.

Photo: YouTube

Kate Hudson won a Golden Globe award for her role in the film Almost Famous... in 2001. Saving you the math, that was 11 years ago. Currently, the average box office gross of her last 10 movies is $37 million. Almost Famous made $32 million in 2001. That's $41 million in 2012 dollars. That's not progress.

Photo: YouTube

Does anyone know why Katherine Heigl keeps getting work? Anyone? She's been involved in 24 movies. 24! Do you know how many of them made over $50 million? Five.

Photo: YouTube

Did you know that Snooki is pregnant? Did you know she's having a boy? Did you know that JWOWW predicted it would be a boy? Did you know that she won't be living in the Jersey Shore house this summer? Did you know that she's given up tanning? Did you know that she wants to have the baby before she gets married to the father? Do you care?

Photo: YouTube

Speaking of someone who has had too long of a celebrity shelf life. Palin was the nominee for Vice President in the 2008 presidential election. 2008. And her side lost. Never has a VP candidate who lost been so famous. Hell, never has an actual Vice President been so famous. Imagine what it would be like if she had actually been in office for the last four years. Actually, let's not imagine that.

Photo: YouTube

Chelsea Lately is still on the air, right? Ah yes, it's still airing on the cable channel E!. Did you know that Time magazine listed Chelsea as one of the 100 most influential people in the world this year? The world must have been really be short on leaders in business and politics this year. Maybe it was because she's an executive producer for a sitcom on NBC based on her book. No, that got cancelled after just two and a half months. Hmmm... maybe E! is a more powerful TV channel than we realized.

Photo: YouTube

ESPN thinks so much of Erin Andrews that they still haven't renewed her contract. She was a Good Morning America correspondent on ABC so she could move over there, but... she hasn't worked there since February 2011, so maybe that's not an option. So what is her next career move?

Photo: YouTube

Victoria Beckham is proof that if you were once really famous, and are married to someone who was once really famous, you can still be really famous even when you really shouldn't be anymore. Need we remind you that The Spice Girls ended their initial run in the year 2000? Apparently we do, because the media still thinks we need stories about how Posh forgot her kid. (Followed a week later with her being inducted into the Mothers Hall of Fame. Whatever the hell that is.)

Photo: YouTube

Remind us why we are still getting inundated with stories like "Kendra Wilkinson: The Size of My Boobs and My Butt Is 'Off'?" Why does anyone care? And how did she get yet another TV show? Former Playboy models with sex tapes who used to appear on reality shows aren't supposed to have this much celebrity shelf life are they? Are they?

Photo: YouTube

Comedian Whitney Cummings parlayed her comedy act and several appearances on the E! show Chelsea Lately into an NBC sitcom called Whitney and her own talk show on E! called Love You, Mean It With Whitney Cummings. Damn, maybe Chelsea Handler and E! really arethat powerful.

Photo: YouTube

When the first thing people think about when they think of you is "I wonder who she's trying to get to marry her now" your career probably isn't at a high point. For J-Love that point would have been sometime between 1995 and 1999. Sure, there was her run on Ghost Whisperer, but when you're 33 and haven't starred in a movie since 2002, perhaps something is missing.

Photo: YouTube

Hilary Duff came to fame playing Lizzie McGuire as a kid for Disney. That ended in 2004. Since then her biggest claim to fame is pretty much the six episodes of Gossip Girl that she appeared on in 2009. Though she did have a stretch of six straight films in which she received Razzie Award nominations for Worst Actress in five of them. Impressive. That sixth movie? It went straight to DVD. But she just had a baby and is married to an NHL player so she's still totally relevant, right?

Photo: YouTube

Pippa Middleton is the sister of the woman who hit the marriage lottery. That's it. Sure she looked great at the wedding so that was a nice moment. A moment that happened over a year ago. And yet she recently received a £400,000 advance for a book on party-planning set to come out in the fall of this year. Let it go people. Let it go.

Photo: YouTube

We understand how Olivia Munn became famous, we're just not sure how she's stayed famous. Is she really the second sexiest woman on the planet? Is there no end to the power of Jon Stewart? Did you even know she was in Iron Man 2? Okay, that really wasn't related, but still, did you know that?

Photo: YouTube

Demi Moore is still really famous despite the fact that we'd estimate that 95% of the population couldn't name two of the last 10 movies she's been in, and we'll even spot you the aforementioned box office bomb LOL with Miley Cyrus. Do you know why no one can name them? They've averaged less than $25 million each at the box office. Quite a streak.

Photo: YouTube

Stacy Keibler was an NFL cheerleader when she was 18 (she's 32 now). Point for her. She was also a Nitro Girl and a WWE Diva from 1999 to 2006. Good again. Since then she's done, well, Dancing With the Stars and dated George Clooney, which if you're only going to do two things of note in six years, those are pretty effective ways to keep your name out there.

Photo: YouTube

The average gross of the last 10 films in which Gwyneth Paltrow has had a role is a little over $70 million, however this includes $318 million and $312 million for Iron Man 1 and Iron Man 2. Take those two movies out and you're left with an average of around $12 million per picture. $12 million. In fact, the last movie other than Iron Man that she was in that made over $40 million was the all-time classic Shallow Hal back in 2001.

Photo: YouTube

Lindsay Lohan has been in three movies since 2007. Three. And note we said "been in" not "starred in." And if you go back and look at the last 10 movies she's been in it's still not pretty as they've averaged just over $28 million each at the box office. The last movie she was in that made over $30 million was Herbie: Fully Loaded in 2005. So why are people still paying attention to her?

Photo: YouTube

Jennifer Lopez is the world's most powerful celebrity, at least according to Forbes. How they came to this conclusion is a bit of a mystery, but that's what they said. Plus in 2011 J-Lo was named the most "Beautiful Person" by People magazine. Again, a bit of a mystery, but there you go. Is she overrated? Just a little bit.

Photo: YouTube

Madonna is the best-selling female rock artist of the 20th century. Unfortunately we are now well into the 21st century. Her most recent album MDNA did set a new record, however, as it achieved (deep breath) the largest second-week percentage sales drop (86.7%) for an album that debuted at number one in the Nielsen SoundScan era in the U.S. It was also the first Madonna studio album not to be in the top 10 in its third week on the chart since 1984. At least she co-wrote and directed the film W.E. this year which made around $860,000 - total.

Photo: YouTube

Just think, what if Kim Kardashian hadn't had a sex tape "leak" in 2003? Would we even know her name? Or her sisters' names? Or her mom? Would we have had Keeping Up with the Kardashians or Kourtney and Kim Take New York or Khloé & Lamar? Just think...

Photo: YouTube

We're not sure what's more disturbing, the fact that Octomom did a porn video, or the fact that there's actually a market for one.

Photo: YouTube

Jessica Alba is super famous, probably one of the more recognizable actresses out there. The question is, why? Unless you're a big Fantastic Four fan what have you seen her act in over the last 10 years? Little Fockers? And?

Photo: YouTube

Did you know that Megan Fox has only been in eight films? And that the seven films that didn't go straight to DVD have averaged a whopping $111 million at the box office? And that if you take out the two Transformers flicks that average drops to a little below $12 million? That is not a typo.
