There have been quite a few campaigns — some serious, some not so much — to get various celebrities to host "Saturday Night Live" in the wake of last year's successful effort to get Betty White up on the studio 8H stage (where she proceeded to absolutely crush it). The latest funny person grabbing public opinion votes is someone we can get behind: Josh Gad, the hilarious star of Broadway's "Book of Mormon."
If you don't know of Gad's work in the Tony-winning Trey Parker and Matt Stone musical, don't worry, we can't get tickets either. But you've probably seen him as a correspondent on "The Daily Show," or in one of his YouTube videos in the series "Gigi: Almost American." He also starred as Jake Gyllenhaal's younger brother in "Love and Other Drugs," where he was lucky enough to get a gander of a fully nekked Anne Hathaway, and as youngster William Barfee — yes "Barfee" — in the Broadway show "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee."
Gad's one of the funniest, quick-witted young actors around, and his big frame and mop of curly hair belie his intelligence and comic timing. The ironic part about this campaign to get him to host "SNL," in my opinion, is that if he were a cast member on the show, he'd instantly become its biggest star. Think Will Ferrell meets Chris Farley. Seriously, he's that good, and it's apparently his lifelong dream to appear on "SNL." Isn't it everyone's?
The one question I have is how Gad would actually be able to pull off the feat of hosting while starring in eight Broadway performances a week (he's not leaving the biggest show on Broadway anytime soon). Maybe he could share hosting duties with his also-excellent "Mormon" co-star Andrew Rannells, and they could rush back and forth on Saturday between the Eugene O'Neill Theatre (for the matinee and evening performances) and dress rehearsal and the live show at 30 Rock. Something makes me think these guys could pull it off.
