Weekend Movies: 'Green Zone' and Five NSFW Reasons To See 'She's Out Of My League'

by joePA | March 12, 2010 at 6:37 p.m.

If you're not glued to the conference tournament action this weekend, there are two very good reasons to head to the multiplex this weekend: "Green Zone" and "She's Out of My League." First of all, Paul Greengrass, the adrenaline-fueled, pins-and-needles director of the "Bourne" trilogy, returns to the big screen with "Green Zone." The film features Matt Damon as a rogue U.S. Army officer in post-invasion Baghdad circa 2003. He's deployed to track down Suddam Hussien's alleged stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction but uncovers the shadowy, tight-lipped truth about the fictitious WMDs. The movie is predictably heavy on political undertones and quite a few critics are calling it "preachy," particularly when compared to the cinematic mastery of the "Hurt Locker," but critic Roger Ebert gave it four stars and calling it "one hell of a thriller."

On a lighter note, "She's Out of My League" is a bro-friendly comedy opening to strong reviews. The movie stars Jay Baruchel, the kid from "Tropic Thunder" and "Knocked Up," who plays a dorky mediocre-at-best TSA agent who lands Molly, a super-hot "perfect 10," as his girlfriend. Against all odds, Molly falls madly in love with him, forcing him to stay on his toes to keep the girl of his dreams. On first glance, movie promises plenty of great bro-friendly banter, as well as some sexy scenes with Alice Eve, who play's Molly. After the jump, we've provide the trailer for both movies, as well as five topless photos of Alice Eve, straight from her last performance in 2009's "Crossing over." That's right, we're sex-ing up our weekend movie preview. Check it out after the jump.  Keep Reading »

Are Bill and Ted Embarking on a Third Excellent Adventure?

by AG | March 11, 2010 at 11:14 a.m.

The biggest news out of the Oscars Sunday night may not have been "The Hurt Locker's" big wins or the disclosure that Meryl Streep loves Hitler memorabilia, but rather a small bit of movie development news gleaned out on the red carpet. And it came from Keanu Reeves of all people. In an interview with MTV no less. So what's the news? A third "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure" may be in the works. According to Aintitcool.com, it's "actually not a terribly new notion -- Keanu's been talking up a third 'Bill & Ted' movie for a while now. His hope is to reunite with co-star Alex Winter in a film that would catch-up with the characters as adults (as much as you can use the world 'adult' in association with Bill or Ted)."

So what was it that Keanu said that has B&T fans excited? See the clip -- and a few nostalgic clips from the original -- after the jump.  Keep Reading »

'Hurt Locker's Big Night, the Best of Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin, and Lots and Lots of Logos

by AG | March 8, 2010 at 10:42 a.m.
"The Hurt Locker" took home six, count 'em, six Oscars last night, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay, as well as Best Editing, and two Sound awards. The latter three were big misses from my Oscar predictions last week -- I thought "Avatar" would haul those in, and bring it's total tally to six. Alas, it was reversed: Not only did "Hurt" win all the big non-acting awards, it was also the top trophy hauler of the night. (As big of a fan of "Hurt" as I am, I should have known, right?) As far as the other awards, not many big surprises. All the Acting winners that everyone predicted -- Sandra Bullock, Jeff Bridges, Mo'nique, and Christoph Waltz -- got their due. "Precious" winning Best Adapted Screenplay over "Up in the Air" was probably the biggest shock of the night.

Along with Best Foreign Language Film, I also totally whiffed on the three short categories (I went 16 for 24 overall). The Documentary Short caused the biggest controversy of the night when one of the producers of the winning film pulled a Kanye and interrupted the director giving his speech. I also should have guessed that "Logorama" would win best Animated short. It's the one nominee that I actually saw and actually have been meaning to share with you all over the past week, but just never got around to posting it. Well, it's after the jump and well worth watching -- the 16-minute movie took six years to make and is comprised entirely of more than 2,500 corporate logos.  Keep Reading »

Academy Award Predictions: Cameron's 'Avatar' to Take Home 6 Oscars, But 'Hurt Locker' to Win Best Picture, Director

by AG | March 7, 2010 at 4:01 p.m.

SUNDAY UPDATE: Heading out to an Oscar party soon? These predictions should be helpful if you're taking part in an Oscar pool...

The Oscars are finally upon us (Sunday, 8:30 p.m., ABC) and when it comes to predictions, we're going to cut to the chase: "The Hurt Locker," a movie we've championed since the day we saw it in January (albeit many months late), is going to win both Best Picture and Best Director for Kathryn Bigelow. It's the best film of the year and despite these last minute ho-hum "controversies" (one producer's illegal email, some Iraq war soldiers calling it inaccurate, etc.), it's poised to knock off the $2.5 billion behemoth that is "Avatar." That doesn't mean "Avatar" won't bring home some trophies: we think it will take home six Oscars in fact. But none of the big ones. The Academy has already rewarded James Cameron for his sweeping ambition ("Titanic") and the last thing they want to hear is another "King of the World" speech. Sunday night is going to be "The Hurt Locker's" night.

There's not much suspense in the other major categories. Sandra Bullock, Mo'Nique, and Christoph Waltz are all locks in their respective acting categories, while, as AK47 mentioned earlier, Jeff Bridges is more than likely going to best George Clooney for Best Actor, although there's still an outside shot at an upset. The tight races in our mind are for Cinematography (is "Avatar" too computer-generated? was "Hurt Locker" too shaky? did anyone see "The White Ribbon"?); Original Screenplay ("Hurt Locker" vs. Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds"); and Editing ("Avatar" vs. "Hurt Locker"). We've made our predictions on every single category below, including the obscure ones like those covering Sound, Documentary, Foreign Language, Costume, and Short. If you're going to win your office or party Oscar pool, those are the predictions that are going to come in handy. Did we see every movie up for an award? Absolutely not. But we did our research and consulted our Ouija boards, and we'll stake our prognosticating reputations on the fact that we'll hit at least 20 of the 24 categories. Good luck in your pools, and enjoy Steve Martin, Alec Baldwin, and the rest of the best night of the year for movies.

Best Motion Picture of the Year
  • Avatar: James Cameron, Jon Landau
  • The Blind Side: Gil Netter, Andrew A. Kosove, Broderick Johnson
  • District 9: Peter Jackson, Carolynne Cunningham
  • An Education: Finola Dwyer, Amanda Posey
  • What Will Win: The Hurt Locker: Kathryn Bigelow, Mark Boal, Nicolas Chartier, Greg Shapiro
  • Inglourious Basterds: Lawrence Bender
  • Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire: Lee Daniels, Sarah Siegel-Magness, Gary Magness
  • A Serious Man: Joel Coen, Ethan Coen
  • Up: Jonas Rivera
  • Up in the Air: Daniel Dubiecki, Ivan Reitman, Jason Reitman  Keep Reading »

Battle of the Oscar-Nominated Bros: Is Jeff Bridges a Bigger Bro Than George Clooney?

by AK47 | March 5, 2010 at 1:46 p.m.

In an Academy Awards campaign season that's been so short on drama that the biggest story has been a "Hurt Locker" producer losing his seat at the Oscars for sending an "illegal email" to voters, there's at least one major category where the winner isn't a foregone conclusion. George Clooney, who plays a corporate downsizer and perennial traveler in "Up in the Air," is vying for the Best Actor Oscar against front-runner Jeff Bridges, who has already taken home Golden Globe and SAG awards for his portrayal of an alcoholic country-music star trying to resurrect his life and career in "Crazy Heart." Although Bridges is about an 85% lock to win, Sean Penn's mini-upset of Mickey Rourke last year and the fact that Clooney is Tom Hanks's heir to the Hollywood nice guy mantle gives the former Dr. Doug Ross an outside shot at taking home the trophy. All of which got us thinking: Clooney is known for his dapper red-carpet appearances, beautiful girlfriends, and dashing leading-man performances, while Jeff Bridges will forever be known as The Dude. So who, ultimately, is the bigger Bro? We decided to take a look back at their careers, both on and off the screen, to determine, if possible, who should take home this year's Lifetime Bro Achievement Award.  Keep Reading »

The Top 30 Best Picture Oscar Winners Every Guy Should Watch

by AK47 | February 22, 2010 at 12:00 p.m.
The 82nd Academy Awards are just two weeks away, and with "The Hurt Locker," "Up in the Air," and "Avatar" among the favorites, it seems destined that yet another Bro-friendly flick will take home the Best Picture Oscar. Bro movies have a long tradition of winning the little gold guy, so we rounded up a list of the top 30 Best Picture winners every Bro should see at least once. Yes, there are some old movies among the bunch (they come from as far back as the 1940s and 1950s), but these were Oscar winners for a reason: they're certified gold and we recommend every movie on this list. The accompanying videos, by the way, are a mixture of both trailers and famous clips. There's definitely some strong language in some, and maybe a few slight spoilers, so beware.

30. "Silence of the Lambs" (1991)
FBI agent Jodie Foster seeks the help of one serial killer, a mentally deranged cannibal (Anthony Hopkins), to help her track down another mass murderer in one of the most suspenseful movies to ever win Best Picture. Deep down, Hannibal Lecter is a total bro -- just not the one you want manning the grill at a summer barbecue.

Gordon Gekko Returns: Trailer #2 for 'Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps' Hits the Web

by joePA | February 19, 2010 at 3:56 p.m.

At the end of January BroBible shared the first trailer for Oliver Stone's "Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps." For the most part, it was righteously hated on. Yesterday the second trailer for the movie hit the web, complete with a Rolling Stones "Sympathy for the Devil" soundtrack. How cliche-ridden does the sequel look? The only thing its missing is the Donald Trump cameo. The newest trailer confirms my long-standing intuition that Shaia LeBuff will make a career out of ruining precious classic movies. For the love of all things sacred, I only hope Scorsese doesn't cast him in his rumored "Taxi Driver" re-boot. Michael Douglas as Gordon Gekko, on the other hand, still looks like the debonaire and endearing bad-ass everyone loves. Check it out after the jump.  Keep Reading »

The Top 10 Best Picture Winners Every Guy Should Watch

10. "Lord of the Rings: Return of the King" (2003)
This Best Picture award was given as much for Peter Jackson & Co.'s achievement for the entire trilogy as it was for this, the final installment. The realization of Tolkien's world of hobbits, wizards, orcs, and that oh-so-precious ring earned a clean sweep -- 11 for 11 -- at the 2004 Oscars, including the first Best Picture for a fantasy film.

20. "Patton" (1970)
"Patton" takes us through the many World War II victories of General George S. Patton (George C. Scott) in Northern Africa, Sicily, France, and eventually Germany. The film's iconic moment comes early on, when Patton rallies his demoralized troops, while standing in front of a grand American flag, with these profound words: "Now, I want you to remember that no bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country."

The 15 Acceptable Chick Flicks a Bro Can Be Forced to Watch This Valentine's Day

by Waffles McButter | February 10, 2010 at 2:03 p.m.

Valentine's Day is just days away and while men, like you and I, loathe the holiday, the thought of having to see the cinematic atrocity named in its honor is about as enticing to most of us as getting warts burned off our dicks. Since the movie is coming out on Friday and women the world over will be yearning to haul men to see it (if they haven't already dragged you to "Dear John," we thought today would be a good day to talk about chick flicks that a man might not mind seeing if he ever finds himself in such a situation -- void of any other options or modes of suicide.

Chick flicks are not an area of my expertise nor are they a pastime that I relish, but I will admit, I have been dragged or forced to see several estrogen boosters in my day. Some have made me wish I had diabetes, while others have been bearable because either the plot wasn't terrible, or the movie itself caused the chick I was with to get extremely turned on -- the thought of love does that sort of thing to most broads. A chick flick can range from anything from a romantic comedy to a sob-fest drama to even a movie about a woman making her mark in the world. Apparently being a whiz in the kitchen or touted as a mean seamstress isn't enough these days.

Below is a list of the 15 movies that the BroBible crew and I came up with, along with my best effort to convince you as to why seeing one of these movies might not be as torturous as you may think. To put it another way, when you have to compromise with a chick (and one day you will), these movies are going to be way less painful for you than watching "Titanic," "Nights in Rodanthe," or having a railroad spike shoved in your eye.  Keep Reading »

The 100 Corniest Sports Movies of All Time

by joePA | February 4, 2010 at 10:47 a.m.

Over the years, Hollywood has perfected the formula for a good sports movie: the underdog-always-wins plot, the motivational coach speeches, the sideline or locker room melodrama, the swelling symphonic score, the jubilant crowd erupting in hysteric fan fever. As much as we love a good sports movie, Hollywood seems to pump out at least a dozen cheesy sports flicks for ever "Raging Bull," "Hoosiers," or "Caddyshack." Some sports movies are so comically bad that they make you wonder what the hell the filmmakers were smoking while creating their priceless Disney moments.

We decided to embark on a noble mission of rounding up and ranking the 100 corniest sports movies of all time. Before ripping out our throats in vengeful disagreement, we'd like to make it clear that our definition of "corny" does not necessarily mean that a movie is terrible, or even bad. That said, plenty of the movies on the list are more painful to watch than taking a ice skate blade to the jugular (thank you, "Blades of Glory"). We guarantee you've watched at least one of these movies on a football-less Saturday afternoon while recuperating from a hangover. Quite a few of the movies on the list are quotable cult classics and others are nostalgically entertaining, particularly if you were born in the 80s or early 90s. Think of this as the ultimate resource to consult when queuing up your Netflix to cope with your post-Super Bowl melancholy. Our list spans five different posts and includes a couple hours of embeddable video, so save your comments, suggestions, and grievances until the very end. Check it out after the jump.  Keep Reading »

'Hurt Locker,' 'Avatar,' 'Inglourious Basterds' Lead Oscar Nominations

by AG | February 2, 2010 at 9:19 a.m.
The Oscar nominations were just announced and, as predicted, it's shaping up to be a huge showdown between "The Hurt Locker" (9 total nominations), "Avatar" (9 total), "Inglorious Basterds" (8 total), "Up in the Air," and "Precious." Rounding out the top 10 Best Picture nominees are "An Education," "Up," "District 9," "The Blind Side," and "A Serious Man." How'd we do in our predictions from yesterday? We hit 44 out of 55, and while our enthusiasm for "The Hangover" wasn't matched by the Academy, we're happy to see some of our misses get rewarded, although disappointed by a few others.

Best Picture:
  • "The Hurt Locker"
  • "Avatar"
  • "Up in the Air"
  • "Precious"
  • "Inglourious Basterds"
  • "An Education"
  • "District 9"
  • "A Serious Man"
  • "The Blind Side"
  • "Up"

How'd we do? We were wrong about "Crazy Heart" and "The Hangover" but had "A Serious Man" and "Up" as two of our four alternates. It's a very strong category this year, strong enough to keep the 10 nomination experiment going into the future.  Keep Reading »

55 Oscar Nomination Predictions Before Tomorrow's Big Announcement

by AG | February 1, 2010 at 7:05 p.m.

You've probably noticed by now that we're a little obsessed with the movie awards season. From the Golden Globes to the Razzies to the Oscars, we try to follow the horse race as closely as possible. Tomorrow morning the Academy Award nominations will be announced and we have some predictions for the top 10 categories, including the 10 potential nominees for Best Picture. We're predicting big nominee hauls for "The Hurt Locker," "Avatar," "Up in the Air," and "District 9," but we'd also love to see multiple nominations for "The Hangover" -- perhaps the tenth Best Picture slot, a Supporting Actor nod for Zach Galifianakis, and a Best Song nominee for Ed Helms' "Stu's Song" ("What do Tigers dream of..." ). Anyway, of our 55 predictions after the jump, we'll be happy to get 45 correct. What do you think we missed?  Keep Reading »

Megan Fox, 'Transformers 2' Top Razzie Nominations of Hollywood's Worst of 2009

by AG | February 1, 2010 at 10:56 a.m.

The Academy Award nominations will be announced early tomorrow morning, which means today we're treated to the nominations for the 2009 Razzies -- the awards handed out annually for dubious achievements in filmmaking. This year, Megan Fox may have landed on more magazine covers (and BroBible pictorials) than anyone else in Hollywood, but she was also part of two of the worst movies of the year: "Transformers 2" and "Jennifer's Body." Who else is up for a Razzie this year? Check out the full list of nominations after the year.  Keep Reading »
