Brooklyn Rapper Skyzoo Keeps His Head to the Sky on His Debut Album, but Doesn't Look Down on Those Who Don't Get His Music

by Jorteh Senah | September 30, 2009 at 12:39 p.m.
Fed up with the myriad of mundane MCs polluting the airwaves? Then maybe you should head underground, where lethargic lyrics can't reach your eardrums and the roots of hip hop still grow strong in the from of well-rounded rappers like Skyzoo. Born and raised in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn, New York, Skyzoo produces music fraught with majestic metaphors, unsurpassed sincerity, and the type of effortless flow that is reminiscent to that of another Brooklyn heavyweight -- Jay-Z.

Days before Sky released his highly anticipated debut album, "The Salvation," BroBible caught up with the buzz-worthy MC to discuss his inclination to carry on rap's traditions, the ambivalence that comes with being an intricate MC, and his model for long-term success.

BroBible: So how excited are you that you're finally able to release your debut album, "The Salvation"?

Skyzoo: It's been a long time coming, so to see it come out is definitely special.

BB: Because you grew up in Brooklyn, I know you have great reverence for the classic albums that your fellow Brooklynites like Biggie and Jay-Z have released. That being said, how much time and dedication did you put into your debut and were you nervous while putting the album together?

Skyzoo: I definitely put a lot of time and dedication into it. I don't know if I was nervous to tell you the truth, because I always knew what I wanted to do, and I always knew what I wanted the album to sound like. When people doubted -- or even if they didn't doubt or wondered or speculated -- I knew exactly what I wanted to do and what I was going to do.

BB: With all the mixtapes and other material you've released over the years, did you ever make a song that was so hot you decided to stash it away for the album, or did you just record new music specifically for the album?

Skyzoo: Nah, because when I made the album I knew exactly what I wanted on it, as far as what I wanted to talk about and beats and things like that. So there were certain songs I would come up with, and I knew I wouldn't think about putting them on a mixtape. I think the line was drawn where I knew what had to go where. There weren't any situations where I thought, 'Well I made this for this mixtape, but let me move it over here.' When I was in mixtape mode I wasn't thinking about anything album related. I knew where to draw that line.  Keep Reading »

What the Hell is Lil' Wayne Talking About? A New Website Tries to Explain

by AG | March 25, 2009 at 12:33 p.m.

We've got another new website to share today. This one probably won't go stale as fast the earlier peep one: Understand Rap. It's a lot like "Snacks and Shit," which we told you about a few weeks ago. Here are a few of our favorite entries from Understand Rap:

Lyrics: "I make it rain on them hoes."
Explanation: I spend extravagantly on the many girls with whom I party.

Lyrics: "twankies with them hundred spokes"
Explanation: Twenty inch Dayton rims - twankies/twinkies refers to "20s", or the inches of the rims, 100 spokes are a variety of Dayton rims, which are spoked as opposed to magged.

The Most Ridiculous Lyrics in Rap, Explained!

by AG | March 5, 2009 at 9:51 a.m.
We've recently become obsessed with the two-month old website Snacks and Shit, and had to pass along the link to all you rap fans out there. The gimmick? The two writers pick the most insane rap lyrics out there and explain why they're so ridiculous. The website name comes from this Jay-Z line from "Hey Papi": "No room service just snacks and shit." The writers' interpretation: "Honestly, this sounds more like something my dad would say. 'Remember, no ordering room service. It's too expensive. Plus, I brought snacks.' " A few more examples:

The Quote: "Homey, I'm the President, Governor, and Mayor." -- Mims, "Move (If You Wanna)"
The Response: No, you're not... this is physically impossible. One more thing: this song is called Move (If You Wanna). Make up your mind if you're going to be a dick or if you're going to be polite.
