Ankle Tape-Flow or No?

by R E E S E | March 17, 2010 at 7:59 p.m.
I've had weak ankles for a long time and nothing works quite as well as ankle-tape for me. But does it increase my flow or make me look like a douche? Excuse the CLH2 and SPs, I know they're deal breakers.  Keep Reading »

15 More Great Athlete Appearances in Movies, BroBible Reader Edition

by joePA | March 15, 2010 at 1:48 p.m.
On Friday we presented a list of 15 great athlete movie appearances in either a featured role or a cameo. After reading your comments and suggestions over the weekend, we've compiled 15 more iconic movie moments when athletes showed up on the big screen, from Michael Jordan to Mike Modano to Andre the Giant. We purposely omitted "Blue Chips," "Eddie," and "Like Mike" because these flicks are stacked athlete talent... and Shaq can't act. If there's anything we're missing, let us know in the comments. Check it out after the jump.

15 Great Athlete Appearances in the Movies

by JR | March 12, 2010 at 11:20 a.m.
In the wake of "The Blind Side's" strong Oscar showing last weekend (a Best Picture nomination and a Best Actress win for Sandra Bullock), it was revealed that NBA star Glen "Big Baby" Davis was one of three finalists to play NFL player Michael Oher in the film. Davis submitted an audition tape but never flew out to L.A. to meet with the producers -- his NBA schedule kept getting in the way. "I was playing, it was at the beginning of the season," he told WEEI this week. "That would've been tough. I would've had to shoot during the summer time, and that was a really important time." (Quinton Aaron, who says he was the worst player on his own high school football team, eventually got the part.) A few daring athletes have tried their hand at acting, albeit with mixed results. Unfortunately, Hulk Hogan, Shaquille O'Neal, and the entire cast of "Eddie" should have stuck to their day jobs. But there are a few standouts. Whether it be a featured role or just a cameo, these are 15 of our favorite movie appearances by athletes.

Set Your DVR For 'Magic & Bird: A Courtship of Rivals'

by joePA | March 8, 2010 at 3:35 p.m.

On Saturday I was able to catch HBO's fantastic new documentary "Magic & Bird: A Courtship of Rivals," and was sorry we left it out of Friday's "Weekend Agenda." By weaving historic NBA footage with candid interviews of Magic Johnson and Larry Bird, the 90-minute film profiles one of the best individual player rivalries in professional sports. Personally, my favorite part occurs during the documentary's final minutes when a visibly agitated and cranky Bryant Gumbel blows his shit and rants, "One of my pet peeves is when people say, 'Oh, Michael Jordan saved the NBA.' Bullshit. Magic and Larry saved the NBA." If you have On Demand, it's worth watching right away. If that's not an option, set your DVR to HBO with this schedule or check it out on Thursday at 7 p.m. The trailer is after the jump.  Keep Reading »

Twenty Years Later, Remembering the Night Buster Douglas Knocked Out Mike Tyson

by AG | February 11, 2010 at 2:51 p.m.

Twenty years ago tonight Buster Douglas knocked out Mike Tyson to claim the heavyweight championship of the world. It was an epic fight -- in Tokyo of all places -- with the 42-to-1 underdog Douglas KOing the Champ in the tenth round. (By the way, those odds came from the Mirage in Vegas, the only casino to even lay down odds for the fight.) It was the beginning of the end for Tyson, and Douglas didn't hold up much better; he lost to Evander Holyfield in the third round in his very next fight and soon retired. For further reading, check out Jeremy Schapp's "myth busting" of the fight and the Sportsguy's 2002 piece on Tyson's retirement.

For your viewing pleasure, up above is a clip of the 10th-round KO. After the jump, check out the hilarious "Mike Tyson's Punch Out" version of those final moments, as well as a very short "Where are they now?" clip by HBO, which includes the not-too-surprising revelation that Douglas ballooned up to more than 400 pounds and was once in a diabetic coma. And finally, for those who are really bored, we've got videos of the entire fight, presented in three parts.  Keep Reading »
