Willkommen Oktoberfest! Part 3: Beer Brats

by Chef Evan | September 25, 2009 at 5:49 p.m.

Is there any other food that is geared more toward men than German food? The pungent flavors of sauerkraut and spicy mustard along with succulent sausages and crispy fried wiener schnitzel are perfectly geared toward fall tailgates and the beer-bellied men that attend them. No salads or dainty portions here. Plus, many German recipes like the braised cabbage and beer brats here call for beer as an ingredient and, as I've written before, cooking with beer is the shit.

Beer Brats with Braised Cabbage

Ingredients:
2 slices bacon, diced
1 onion, sliced thinly
0.25 cup brown mustard
0.5 head of cabbage, shredded
4 fresh bratwurst sausages (not that precooked bullshit)
1 Oktoberfest beer
Salt and pepper  Keep Reading »

Willkommen Oktoberfest! Part Two: What to Look for in an Oktoberfest Beer Hall

by Chef Evan | September 25, 2009 at 4:31 p.m.
Since all of us can't make it to Munich for Oktoberfest this year we've got our own stateside German heritage celebration with bars, brats, and, of course, beers. In order to celebrate Oktoberfest properly you must find the right location in which to get shmammered. You can't celebrate everything the Fatherland has to offer in a nightclub on South Beach or in O'Malley's Pub with shamrocks plastered all over the walls. Here's a top ten list of Must-Haves for your Oktoberfest drinking locale.

10. Long sausage list
What German tap house is complete without a full listing of bratwurst, nurnburger, blutwurst, frankfurter, knackwurst, landjager, and other salty wieners on the menu? Don't forget the sauerkraut and mustard.

9. Frauleins
Big breasted blondes delivering barrelfuls of Bavaria's best brews. Brought to you by the letter, "B."

8. At least one guy in a lederhosen
Unless you're at a gay bar celebrating Oktoberfest, in which case there would be many, many more.  Keep Reading »

Willkommen Oktoberfest! Part One: Two Big Apple Brews

by Chef Evan | September 25, 2009 at 3:45 p.m.
Since all of us can't make it to Munich for Oktoberfest this year we've got our own stateside German heritage celebration with bars, brats, and, of course, beers. In Part One we'll be discussing two Oktoberfest specialty brews from the Empire State.

When Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria was married in 1810 he threw a kick-ass rager with horse racing and lots of beer. The resulting brew and festival were dubbed Oktoberfest and have been celebrated as a 16 day all-you-can-drink festival of beer and everything Deutschland. The Oktoberfest Marzen style of beer uses German malt and hops, but some of its best examples are from right in my neck of the woods, New York.

Interesting Fact: Brooklyn Brewery hired Milton Glaser, an iconic graphic designer, to create the logo for the brewery. Glaser, co-founder of New York Magazine, is responsible for creating another iconic New York logo: the I Love New York slogan you see on T-shirts everywhere.

Brooklyn Brewery Oktoberfest

NYC's premiere brewery, Brooklyn Brewery supplies bars not just throughout the five boroughs but all over the country. Famous for its Brooklyn Lager, the Williamsburg brewery puts out an Oktoberfest style to keep New Yorkers drunk throughout the whole two-week festival.  Keep Reading »

Oktobrofest

by Bam Margerbrah | October 13, 2008 at 3:08 p.m.
Everyone has heard of this seminal beer festival, held annually in Munich, Germany. I can only attempt to explain this madness and debauchery to those who haven't made the pilgrimage to this beer drinkers' Mecca. I've...  Keep Reading »
