13-Year-Old Delaware Quarterback David Sills Commits to USC

by AG | February 5, 2010 at 11:40 a.m.

Remember the scene in "Wayne's World" where Wayne and Garth are being magically whisked around the world via bluescreen, and suddenly stop in Delaware. "Hi, I'm in Delaware," deadpans Wayne. Point being? Other than killer tax breaks, U of D, and Dewey Beach, there's, er, not much in Delaware.

Just don't tell that to David Sills of Bear, Delaware. The 13-year-old, six-foot star quarterback just committed -- not to a local high school or First State prep school -- but to USC. That's right, Lane Kiffin just signed a 13 year old to the Trojan Class of 2019.

Sills' personal coach Steve Clarkson told ESPN that when Kiffin asked him his opinion of the recruit, he said, "You might call me crazy, but you've known me a long time, right? And when I said if there was going to be a LeBron James of football it'd be Jimmy Clausen that turned out to be a pretty good prediction. And when I said Matt Barkley had the potential to be as good as Jimmy, he ended up winning Gatorade Player of the Year as a junior and starting at USC as a freshman, right? Well, I've got a kid now who is better than all of them and he's in Delaware. You gotta take a look at him."

YouTube video of Sills is after the jump. Pretty impressive for a 13 year old.  Keep Reading »

A Recap of Recruitment Drama on College Football National Signing Day 2010

by joePA | February 3, 2010 at 6:24 p.m.

The dust from College Football's National Signing Day is beginning to settle. Although Urban Meyer's coaching status remains up in the air, Florida still managed to claim more five-star freshman prospects than any other university. Nonetheless, safety Demar Dorsey shocked Gator Nation today after signing for the University of Michigan. Today's other signing-day darling was LSU, which managed to snatch up four four-star recruits at the last minute. Just in case you weren't glued to ESPN's live coverage all day, we've provided a brief recap of today's signing day drama after the jump.  Keep Reading »

20 Reasons Why Pete Carroll Is An Idiot and Lane Kiffin Is Not

by Waffles McButter | January 13, 2010 at 11:12 a.m.
When the entire country is questioning why you would leave the gorgeous state of California, not to mention one of the most storied programs in all of college football, to go coach the hapless Seattle Seahawks -- a team from a city most famous for the 90s grunge movement, the world's largest free standing dildo, and a movie about insomniac lovers -- you are either a evil genius or a complete idiot. In this case, and given Pete Carroll's NFL track record, I am going to side with those calling him an idiot.

Then, on the flip side of Carroll's career suicide you have Lane "I jump ship faster than Nick Saban" Kiffin, a man who just did his career -- and its dismal 12-21 head coaching record (NFL and collegiate) -- a great service by leaving Tennessee to take the reins (and hopefully bed some grad students) at USC. Athletics notwithstanding, this move to USC is going to make Kiffin a happy man because while the chicks in Knoxville are certainly hot, Kiffin was bread at USC and loves himself some Cali broads. If by some chance you don't believe me that Carroll's decision is moronic and Kiffin's is spot-on, here are 20 really compelling reasons that might change your mind.  Keep Reading »

Can the Tide Hook the Horns for BCS Title?

by JR | January 7, 2010 at 3:57 p.m.

The last time Texas played for a BCS championship at the Rose Bowl was in 2006, and you'll recall that Vince Young ran any which way he pleased against the juggernaut that was Southern Cal. The result was a 41-38 victory for the Longhorns in one of the most memorable college football games of the decade.

Flash forward to 2010 and Texas finds itself back in Pasadena in a showdown with Alabama for all the marbles. Unfortunately Horns fans, unlike four years ago it looks like you may come up empty-handed. Alabama has been the team to beat since demoralizing Florida in the SEC Championship game and there's little reason to think that they won't cap this season with another emphatic statement against a powerhouse program.  Keep Reading »

Brian Kelly Takes Over at Notre Dame, His Cincinnati Players Tell Him 'Child Please'

by AG | December 11, 2009 at 1:30 p.m.

So Brian Kelly is leaving Cincinnati to become the next head coach of Notre Dame. Actually, correction: Brian Kelly has left Cincinnati and today at 1:30 p.m. will be introduced as the next head coach of Notre Dame. Yes, four weeks before the Bearcats' Sugar Bowl matchup against Florida. Kelly was coy about his plans last night at the team's annual banquet, and his players didn't know that a final deal had already been struck. Three hours later, after the banquet, Kelly met with the team to announce the news, and let's just say it didn't go over so well. Check out some of the choicest quotes from his players after the jump.  Keep Reading »

'Bama vs. Gators, and the Rest of the Conference Championship Picks

by JR | December 4, 2009 at 11:36 a.m.

Now that Good Ol' Charlie Weis got the axe, we can finally again focus on teams and games that matter. Conference championship week is upon us, meaning that good football and even better betting opportunities are here. Since we are dealing with the top teams from their respective conferences, betting lines are naturally tight. Coming out on top this weekend could come down more to a gut-feeling than a strategic approach. Choose wisely, my friends.

Here are your Week 14 picks. (Home team in caps.)

Cincinnati (-1.5) over PITTSBURGH
If momentum is any indicator, the Bearcats will reign supreme. They remain unbeaten and have a healthy and lethal Tony Pike back under center. Right now it appears that the only thing that can stop them is themselves. If the offense sputters, which it shouldn't, the Panthers could have a shot. But the Bearcats simply have too much to lose in the grand scheme of things with a slip-up here and will take care of business.  Keep Reading »

Five Dark Horse Heisman Candidates and Your Week 12 Picks

by JR | November 20, 2009 at 11:03 a.m.
With all due respect to Mark Ingram, Colt McCoy, and other big-name Heisman trophy hopefuls, listed below are five dark-horse candidates deserving of the award in their own rights. While Ingram and McCoy likely will be the national favorites to capture the thing, it is no sure bet, given the parity of the contenders to this point. Thus, leaving the door open for an unexpected winner.

5. Ryan Mathews, RB, Fresno St. -- Has 1,491 yards (tops in the nation) and 14 TDs, while averaging 7.0 yards per carry. Drawback is playing for a middle-of-the-road West Coast team.

4. Jacquizz Rodgers, RB, Oregon State -- Has tallied 1,148 yards and 17 scores, adding 62 receptions for 397 yards, for a Beavers squad with Rose Bowl aspirations.

3. CJ Spiller, RB, Clemson -- Spiller has been talked about as a challenger for the award since stepping onto campus. Now a senior, he is putting together his best all-around campaign with 836 rushing yards, 382 receiving yards, and 15 total touchdowns (four coming via special teams).  Keep Reading »
