The Top 5 College Football Coaching Performances This Season, Plus Your Week 10 Picks

by JR | November 6, 2009 at 3:15 p.m.
Before we get to your regularly scheduled programming, a little side note about coaching. For all the attention that the Urban Meyers, Nick Sabans, and Joe Paternos of the world receive, there are as many coaches out there doing an admirable job, minus the fanfare. So let's celebrate the unheralded guys. Here are the Top 5 coaching performances of the season.

5. Dave Wannstedt, Pittsburgh
Has the one-loss Panthers tied for first in the Big East. True, they haven't been too tested by their relatively easy schedule, but the Panthers have taken care of business nonetheless.

4. Paul Johnson, Georgia Tech
Built an efficient offensive attack that only Miami has been able to figure out. There's a strong chance Johnson's troops will end the year with one loss and in a BCS bowl game.

3. Brian Kelly, Cincinnati
The most surprising team in the nation? Perhaps. With Kelly's offense you know what you are going to get -- lots of big plays.  Keep Reading »

In Search of a Refund for These Picks? Please Contact Chip Kelly

by JR | September 25, 2009 at 1:03 p.m.
After receiving an invoice from an alumnus requesting a refund because of Oregon's lackluster performance in an opening night loss to Boise State, coach Chip Kelly signed a $439 check and sent it to the man, Tony Seminary. That is a return policy that won't be beat.

It' too bad this practice won't catch on throughout every sport. It simply can't because certain coaches would be flat-out broke. Mike Dunleavy, Herm Edwards and Dusty Baker, we're talking to you.

And in case you were wondering, refrain from emailing me an invoice if I cost you thousands should these selections turn out to be horrendous. (Last week I went an inauspicious 9-10.) Any gripes should be directed to Chip Kelly. Thank you for understanding. Anyways, here are your Week 4 picks. (Home team in caps.)

FLORIDA STATE (-14.5) over South Florida

South Florida is where football players go who weren't recruited by Florida, FSU, or Miami. It's safe to assume that these kids have a chip on their shoulder. Unfortunately, it's going to take more than that to pull off an upset.

KANSAS (-13.5) over Southern Mississippi

Apparently the Jayhawks have enough time to beat up both their opponents and members of the Kansas basketball team. No joke, players from the football and basketball teams were involved in two separate fights over a two-day period, resulting in a hospital visit for one of the basketball players. Can't we all just get along?  Keep Reading »
