The Weekend Bill Belichick Turned Himself into a Goat
by AG | Monday, November 16, 2009 at 6:11am | 11 comments - 109 readsWas Bill Belichick's decision to go for it on 4th and 2 last night against the Colts (up 6 with 2 minutes to go on their own 28 yard line) the worst coaching decision of Sunday's football action, of the season, or of the entire history of the NFL? It was certainly the worst call in Belichick's storied career. We all know that you don't want to give Peyton Manning the ball with 2 minutes to play down a touchdown; but we also all know that you really don't want to give Manning the ball in that situation on your own 30 yard line! The challenge for the Colts in that last drive was not whether or not they could score, but whether they could waste enough time so that they couldn't give Brady and Moss a shot at a last-second comeback of their own.
This being Peyton Manning, of course, they ran down the clock, actually took a couple huddles, and scored with 13 seconds left, tying the game at 34-34. Matt Stover's PAT clinched a victory that they absolutely did not deserve (Manning was throwing up ducks all night, including two INTs) and secured Belichik's place in the Unbelievably Stupid Coaches Hall of Fame. The Patriot loss also yielded a case of cameraman assault and battery. Watch after the jump as Belichik's security guard throws a camera guy to the ground after the game.
What else happened this weekend?
Ochocinco, Carson Palmer, and Cedrick Benson continue to show that the "Hard Knocks" curse is going to end with them, as the Bengals improved to 7-2 with an 18-12 win over the Steelers. Benson suffered a hip flexor, but should be back against the Raiders next week.
Also, if you're a Giants fan, the bye week provided more than just much-needed rest: all four of their next opponents -- the Falcons, Broncos, Cowboys, and Eagles -- went down, plus Atlanta lost Michael Turner to a sprained ankle, Denver's Kyle Orton hobbled off the field with his own ankle injury, the Cowboys lost tackle Marc Colombo with a broken fibia, and the Eagles' Michael Westbrook suffered his second concussion in a month.
Out in San Diego, LDT arrived at his locker on Sunday to find a surprise from his wife waiting for him: "My wife is pregnant. I found out before the game. She left me a gift in my locker. It said, 'Open immediately.' I thought it was a necklace. It was a pregnancy test."
In college football, TCU remained undefeated, beating Utah 55-28. Only Florida, Alabama, and Texas sit ahead of them in the polls, with Cincinnati and Boise State, also both unbeaten, following behind them. USC tumbled in the polls to No. 22 after losing to now-No. 14 Stanford 55-21.
In other weekend news, "2012" cleaned up at the box office, President Obama made his first visit to China, Sarah Palin's new book is getting "erratic" reviews, and a British scientist revealed herself as the author of a popular anonymous blogger who once worked as a call girl and whose life got made into books and a TV series.

the colts were going to score whether belichick gave them the ball on their half of the field or on his. thats just what peyton does. i like the call. also, i'm not so sure kevin faulk didnt get that first, after the one quick bobble it looked like that ball was still over the line.
agreed. burned those timeouts and couldn't challenge. I also like the confidence. Tom Brady 1 play 2 yards for the win knowing you'd punt to manning. I like the call too. They'll see them again.
I too share this sentiment...NE converts 78% of the time on 4th down...if they had converted then they would clinch it. Add in Peyton's high percentage of driving down the field and scoring from anywhere in the 50 states inside 2 minutes and it all makes sense.
its honestly not that bad of a call I agree with all your comments. They usually get the 4th down conversion. It was unfortunate that they couldn't challange. Tough loss but I think you will see them bounce back next time they face Indy.
you guys are all fucking nuts. you don't go for it on your own 28 yard line. you just don't. and what does it say about your confidence in your defense? Belichick and the Pats officially jumped the shark last night.
Considering the refs gave them the worst marking on the field. He bobbled the ball for a millasecond and you wouldn't want to punt it to give Manning the ball because your defense is as tired as fuck because they were all over him the whole game. Besides, wait for the playoffs, it's not over.
clearly you dont know shit about situational football if you think that was a bad call. this website is j bro central
i miss the beer lodge
as mike francesca pointed out relentlessly this afternoon, they passed on third and two...if belichick had thought/planned out going for it on 4th --why would they pass? that third down play was almost pick sixed. colts have an awful run d. this was a terribly called series all together. anybody defending belichick is trying to sound like an independent, free thinker --or theyre just fanboys. belichick fucking blew this one.
and if they really didnt trust their d at all --why try to stop peyton on 1st down on the 1?
and lt2 assumes his wife gives him a necklace? pretty unbro.
the only reason the game was close was because randy moss is a freak of nature. all brady has to do is throw it up and 9 times out of ten moss will come down with it
