Normally this is where I would give you a kick-ass recipe for the best burger you've ever tasted, some blazin' barbecue baked beans, or a potato salad that would make your mother shed proud, joyful tears, but sometimes cooking everything from scratch seems like a little too much work. Plus, a good cook knows how to make due with what he has and if all your cooking skills amount to almost nothing, well you should know how to throw a party, too. Print this list out, buy everything on it and fire up the grill while you let your even drunker friends light the fireworks.
Meat:
Where to get it? Butcher or well stocked grocery meat counter.
What to get? Bratwurst, burgers, anything smoked.
You can go with any kind of Bratwurst here. Some companies have a Cheddarwurst, which has cheese inside of it, and eliminates a whole step for you. Success. (Tip: Boil the brats in a cheap beer for five minutes before you grill 'em). For the burgers, ask your butcher for an 80/20 lean-to-fat mix. With burgers as in life, fat equals flavor. And finally, pick up a kielbasa or a jalapeno-smoked sausage; anything but a hot dog.
Sides:
Where to get it? Grocery store or, better yet, ask your friends to bring them.
What to get? Cole slaw, potato salad, baked beans.
You can save some scrilla by asking your buddies to help out with the cost of the party by asking them to bring some side items. Slaw, potato salad, and beans are all classic sides that are easy to find and delicious. If you choose to buy these yourself I would suggest a German potato salad (less mayonnaise-y with a bacon-fat/vinegar based sauce) and some spicy barbecue baked beans.
Fixin's:
Where to get it? A farmer's market would be great, but a grocery would do, too.
What to get? Lettuce, tomato, onion, at least two kinds of cheeses, buns.
Beefsteak or heirloom tomatoes have sweet and tangy flavors and are in season right now so they shouldn't be hard to find. Just go with a general iceberg for your burgers, no wimpy arugula here. For burgers, I like red onions or Vidalia onions. The red onions have a nice bite and a great color while the Georgia Vidalia's are super sweet. I go with a cheddar or a swiss on my burgers, but American is welcome too. Go with a soft egg bun or Kaiser roll, sesame seeds or not is up to you.
