Surrounded by a vast salty ocean and floating atolls built of trash and debris, Mariner is forced to drink his own purified urine during the opening minutes of the post-apocalyptic, global warming disaster movie.
Why bring up the most memorable scene from one of the costliest Hollywood flops of all time? Because today is the United Nation's annual World Water Day, which aims to bring awareness to water conservation initiatives and the inadequate supply of potable freshwater around the world. Fortunately, most of the developed world is blessed with the natural and man-made resources to provide fresh, pure drinking water. Here in the United States, there's a pretty good chance you'll never come down with violent diarrhea from giardia or ingest a life-threatening tapeworm by drinking brackish waste water from a tap. However, the UN estimates that 1.1 billion people around the world lack access to a sanitary water supply. According to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moo, unsafe water kills more people than war.
